Default Lifter Tray Mod

Anyone try this?
I saw it on Powerblock the other morning...you drill a 1/2" Hole in the side of each spot where the Lifter is..it's supposed to help the Oil drain back down..I just put together my Stroker, I did it in that to see what happens.

HP tv must have read the of the LS1 book, Its the Tan colored one, I dont have it infront of me. They mentioned exactly that mod. Dill a lil bigger hole so the oil could drain down. I guess when you have cars with high volume pumps, they can drain a pain pretty quickly and the purpouse is to get it back down in the pan ASAP.

If you have the trays out, id mod them, every lil but helps.

When I get to work on monday ill find the exact one, its the older white one, or the newer tan one and ill get the ISBN and pg #, its a good read for sure.

That is what I have read also after I saw it. I put in a Melling HV Pump as well, and took out the upper Windage Tray to see what it does. One of the Major functions of that Windage Tray is side to side movement, I don't push it into Corners hard enough..so hopefully that will help the Drain Down..

Just like BlackScreaminMachine said, if you spend more than 10-15 seconds in high rpm range, especially for roadcoarse or autocross events, you want to do this because it helps the oil drain back down the block better. I would think that it would help with getting some of the oil away from the rockers and springs quicker so you would have a better flow of oil. I think if the oil sits on top of the heads for too long it would tend to get hotter as well.

be careful, those lifter trays become very brittle after awhile and can crack easy during drilling.

Basically what I did was take the Tray, Drill a 1/2" Hole in the side of the galley in each one.

If you bread one they only cost $5. Just use a slow speed on the drill press.

I did it when i just put in my motor, except i did one 1/4" hole by each pushrod on the side where the oil would pool

I thought about it and decided against it. The trays keep the lifters from rotating and are brittle getting more brittle with age. I feared the amount of vibration that they see might propagate a crack and could result in a disaster later. If you are into the motor every year I might consider it, but for street driving and an occasional romp I don't personally think its worth the risk and there is a potential down side as well.

Yea..I was thinking the same, but I guess it depends on where you drill them. You can still keep the strength in them and have a hole..they are brittle but like anything, it is forgiving in places also.

I have been drilling these holes for a few years with good results. We always use a roto-broach cutting tool instead of a drill, this may help. I have 69,000 miles on my truck now with the turbo engine that has these drainback holes, the engine was installed when the truck had 27 miles on it (after engine dyno thrashing!) and has held up well. We have also used this mod on all our road race engines, including endurance engines with no ill effects.
