Question AFR / LS6 Heads ?

Can you get better #'s RWHP out of a set of ported LS6 Heads than a set of AFR's? The AFR's are a LS1 head and the LS6 are LS6. On eather a stock LS1 or a full bolt on LS1. Crazy Question!

The AFR's will provide more area under the curve and a thicker deck (stronger head).

But are they worth the extra 1000 dollars... I say get the LS6 heads and spend the extra grand in the clutch or forged pistons/rods or a fast intake or a nitrous system, or tires... ect... the marginal difference in performance the AFRs provide over the LS6 heads isnt great enough to explain the difference in price.

They could be worth twice the gains in power and not cost twice as much (not to mention a far lower fraction of that when you factor in all the other costs associated with a headswap). It dependes on how good the factory ported heads are really.

And then there is the low end snap and throttle response you would never get with a much larger volume ported head when its all said and done. The SOTP gains and improved fuel consumptoin can be felt and appreciated every day without ever having to go WOT to appreciate it.

There is ALOT more going on here when you bolt a smaller more efficient head on your engine than initially meets the eye. Go get a ride in a buddy's car that might own a set.

Also, just to clarify, the AFR's are our own aftermarket proprietary casting with much thicker decks as Vette nuts already touched on....they are not LS1 or a factory casting of any kind.

Hope this gives you some food for thought...

Happy Turkey day everybody

Tony

PS....And a year from now when your looking for more power (after you get used to the first infusion you are considering now), I promise you will regret not getting the premium head the first time because you know you left some ponies under the table. Its cheaper to do it right the first time....if you only knew how many people do it more than once (when there not satisfied with their mediocre results) you would be shocked. Its not that a premium head gurantees great results (the entire combination is paramount) it just makes better results a whole lot easier to achieve and if you do the research and get the combo just right you will be in the top 10% or so of your piers....a place more difficult to reach without a kick *** cylinder head (the most important choice you will make in determining the final output of your combo).

May as well 'take the blue pill' and run the cam Tony spec'd to run with those heads.

6016 LS1 Hydraulic Roller Custom Cams 224/228 .581/.581 $399.00

However, I noticed for the first time there is a smaller cam also available from AFR. Perhaps Tony can chime in on the LSA and ICL of these cams and what kind of torque you get from the cam below, in trade for the few HP you'd lose over the cam above.

Looking at these cams 224/228 LSA112, 228/228 LSA112, 228/230 LSA112, 228/232 LSA 112. And i'll look into the 224/228 and the 220/224 cams you listed.I want a street/strip close to Pro Street as they say.I want close to a DD,I will drive it to work and around town. 400+ RWHP,Torque around 400+,And if needed a 100 shot.I don't want a cam that all my HP is at the top. And nothing at the bottom and mid. That is why i'am staying around the 230's on the cam, and + not to change out the springs every year.I have a 2001 SS 6 speed and 3:73. Stock, with HB tuners 336 RWHP, Cat back SLP, 12.8 @ 107.Love to be in 10's or low 11's.

many vendors sell cams w/ those specs.
all will be a lil differnent though so do a lil research
any of those pretty much w/ the afrs and bolt ons will get ya @ your 400 rwhp mark
buts so would well pprted ls6 heads and many of those cams w/ boltons

ther are a LOT! of cam only cars w/ bolt ons in the 390+ rwhp range just so ya know

just do your research on the board and really...really...really get your goals straight for the vehical befor you buy anything like cam heads ect....

The 114 LSA will give better street manners and more PTV for an equivalent setup than a 112.

What Tony said. The AFR's will provide more HP under the curve, and partial throttle and throttle response will be greatly improved.

Not worth the extra $1000 now? What about when there are no more mods to do and you are looking for the extra 10rwhp or so? Is a grand worth it then?

I believe Tony made 480rwhp with AFR 205's and the 224/228 cam. That combo makes power everywhere and still pulls to 7000. What more could you ask for?

Yes, but the people looking for the last 10whp make up such a small percentage of people buying heads for the LS1 its basically a null point. If I need more power after my Ls6 heads and TREX cam I'll add a 50.. or hell a 150 shot... both of which will still give me a lot more performance than the AFRs over the LS6s. Hell, if thats still not enough power I'll add a supercharger or turbo system. The LS6 heads have been good for over 1000whp in FI applications.. I dont think many people here will need 10 more WHP if they are making 1000. I do understand that the gains of having the AFR heads will be magnified in a FI application but again... for 99.99% of people on here they can accomplish their goals cheaper with ls6 heads.. Partial throttle response may not be as good with the LS6s.. but the price your willing to pay for that feel is up to the consumer.. To me its just not worth it, but my car is 2500lbs with 4.10 gears on a 275 rear tire... so any more throttle response and I'll put this thing into a wall.

Exactly! That's a good enough reason right there! At some point your gonna want more. It's just how it is in this game of power and speed. Why buy your "decent" heads, and when you want more, spend the extra money on the FAST 90/90 only to get the power that the better heads would have given you from the start, when THAT money could have been spent on the better heads in the first place! Buy the good heads from the start, then on down the road you can get the FAST setup, and make even MORE power

afr's are good heads but look at what the fastest h/c cars are running...they are running heavily ported factory casting heads. Mind you when i say heavily ported that typically means they will be more expensive then the afr's are. Look in the drag racing section on this forum if you want to see what the fast cars are running.

I'am looking for 400+RWHP and 400+RWTQ.On a cam that is not past the 230's, I don't want the power all at the top.And not to change out the springs every year.Low 11's or better in the 10's. on a DD, and after the setup i may go with a 100 shot. The SS is all stock execpt HB tuners 336 RWHP, 3.73's, SLP cat back.Free air. 12.8 @ 107. with 3.42's
