advertised duration means nothing. this is a small cam, NOT made for gen 3 engines i believe.

220/224 - .510 lift on a 111+3 - 50 thou

That cam is specifically made for carb'd LS engines,
And I disagree that adv. duration means nothing.

that is a small cam for gen 3 engines,, gen 3 engines are a totally different breed of engine compared to the old small block, gen 3 engines run great with high duration and still have exellent driveability were an old school small block with the same cam specs would hardly run

duration at .050 is a more constant way of measuring duration, that cam with 200/224 duration will be fine

the cam in my 6.0L(364ci) is a Comp Cams XR281HR 228/230 at .050 duration and still idles great at 850ish rpm

my brother has a 6.0L with the edelbrock 216 cam :
Duration Advertised 314° Intake/322° Exhaust
Duration @ .050'' 230° Intake/237° Exhaust

and even that cam idles great at 850-900 rpm and has great driveability

What are you gonna put the 5.3 in and what will it weigh? If your gonna come it at about 3500lbs or less it should be real nice. It's gonna lope pretty good too.

Hey guys,

It's going into a pro street studebaker lark. Should be 3200#'s or so.
I'm putting it together for a buddy and we are trying to do a real budget build on it to see how he likes it......I am a BBC guy myself and haven't messed with these too much.

Of course he is looking for a nice lopey idle but still have decent manners.
It will have about a 2500 stall or so. 3.73ish gears.
I can buy that cam new for $260.00 and it is a direct bolt in.
Unlike most all the other cams your looking at $500-600 before it's in. (more than we have in the complete engine)

I have 2 complete 5.3's with all the efi stuff if anybody wants some efi parts.

Any more suggestions appreciated.
Thanks, Brian

Sounds like it'll be a fun car. With that cam I would go up to a 3000 converter though. I also recommend you upgrade the valve springs for that cam. Scoggin Dickey has the LS6 springs for $52.25 per set and they are a direct swap. You can find them here: http://www.sdparts.com/catalog/lsgen...veSprings.aspx

Are the LS6 springs a direct swap? No retainers, etc?
Thanks, again.

What do you guys think about the ASA cam.......I have talked with the guy and convinced him we should spend a little more money.
He is not going to want to get into much more than the LS6 springs.
And maybe a better cam.
He doesn't realize the potential of the LS engine over his 350's with a mild cam/intake combo. I talked him into doing this and want him to be impressed with the results.

Thanks, Brian

If your not gonna do anything to bring the compression ratio up I would stay clear of any cam larger than 224/224 for the 5.3l. Most folks on the truck forum have the best results w/ the TR220(Thunder Racing), and find that going larger than that is counterproductive. But this is in a vehicle that weighs 1000 pounds more than what you are working with, which is why I say 224/224 should be your limit.

Doing some more research.......LS6 springs and maybe one of these cams?
Thnking of getting it ground on a 110lsa.
With no efi to tune, it should help get the "sound" and come into it's power pretty hard.

They all seem like they should work?
But the decriptions like....., superior top end, higher rpm power........
These are not large cams, but come with large cam descriptions?
Thanks again guys.
Brian

Well, personally I think its great! LOL, but I'm biased. Cam only plus bolt-ons put me @ 393rwhp & 383rwtq. I drive this car daily (almost 20k since the cam install) and it drives fine (tuned). Power peaks @ 6000 and carries to 6400(shift point). Makes about 360tq @ 3000rpm.
