A stock bore 6.0 is 4.001"
The crank you're talking about is a 4.00" stroke crank.
This combination would give you a 402. Weren't most of the later cars that were badged "396", actually 402s?
If you're really hung up on getting a 396, you could take a stock 346 and bore it .010 (maybe) and use the big Lunati 4.125" crank for 396. Or a 4.125" resleeve with a stock crank offset ground will yeild 396. Or a 6.0 liter bored .060 (you'll need to sonic test for core shift first) and use the Scat 3.8" stroke crank, which gives 393.
