Default Reassembling motor this weekend, a few bolt questions

Okay, well I've been waiting and waiting and finally I should get the rotating assembly back from getting balanced and can FINALLY start putting this thing back together. Question is, which bolts should be used with some sort of loc tight/thread sealer when reassembling an engine? It may be an awkward question but some people go pretty crazy with the stuff and just put it on every bolt they put in anywhere on their car and others really don't use it at all. I'm just wanting to make sure this thing goes back together as solidly as possible.

Also, any tips on things to watch out for as I'm going back together with it?

Thanks guys!

When I built and installed my motor I loctited everything except the head bolts and the motors internal bolts like the rod bolts and such.

in reality as long as you torque to the right specs then you should be fine, but everyone always wants that safety blanket of putting loctite on the bolts

Sounds like I'll be putting loctite on quite a few bolts. Brad8266, not to sound stupid but why not put them on internal moving parts?

I just put locktite on cam retainer bolts, oil pump and pick up fly wheel. Put sealer on you main bolts that go through the side of your block and only those main bolts, I also put sealer on my rocker arm bolts and balacer bolts....

+1 loctite is some neat **** . i saw a program on history about loctite . when it exposed to oxygen it is just liquid . though when when it gets in threads and is not exposed to oxygen it becomes very hard . top race teams use this stuff by the vial on everything .

You dont want that stuff on the main bolts, rod bolts, and head bolts. You are supposed to use moly lube on them.

+1

There is no need to put loc tite on if you're torqueing to the proper specs. The appropriate "stretch" of the bolt provides all of the locking strength needed. Again make sure you're using moly lube on the bottom heads of the bolts, otherwise you'll get an inaccurate torque reading, which could prove disasterous for your internals.

Also make sure you're using extreme-pressure lube on the main and rod bolts, and follow your angle torque gauge closely.

The only other substance you should be using on any hardware is a small bead of sealer on the side bolts because they thread into the crankcase.

Hope this helps.

Vince
