Default Help me with my cam selection please....

I have an mildly stock 02 Camaro SS. Aside for the LS6 Intake, a PCM flash, MAF, chambered exhaust and under drive pulleys, it's pretty stock.

Numbers at the crank and adjusted for sea level were around 380HP and 400TQ. At the ground it was somthing like 325 or 330.

I'm looking to add a "bump stick" to increase the out-put. I race a lot in SCCA events but I'm stuck in the Street Modified Class (due to my suspension upgrades) and I keep getting my *** handed to me by these dudes with heavily modified engines.

I'm a big GM Performance Parts fan so that's why I want to stick with the "General" when continue to upgrade my internals. In SCCA racing I need TQ and the beginning of the RPM band and I need it to carry me through the mid range. The other edge to this sword is I don't want the car getting loose every time I step on the gas. I'll be running very sticky tires so I don't think this will be much of a problem

I have bassicly lived at SDPC website the past week and viewed it a dozen times and I'm caught between the following three cams. Basically I would like to know between the three cams listed below which will perform best for me, and what kind of numbers "could" I expect after the install.

$376.95 LS1 ASA camshaft 1.7 Rocker ratio "NO SPECs" must buy the LS6 springs

$429.00 HOT Cam Kit for 1997-2003 LS1 engines: Specs include 0.525" valve lift with stock 1.7 ratio rocker arms and comes with LS6 springs

$468.99 LS1 Grand-Am Cup, 239/251 Duration @ 0.050, Racing Camshaft. This cam would require serious head work meaning intake and exhaust valves etc. Not sure this is a valuable option for me.

If there are any "notable mentions", I would love to hear about them.

Alot of options and opinions here? The TR224 cam is a strong, proven piece.

You definately might look at some of the available camshafts from vendors of this site. You can really do better than the standard GM camshafts IMHO. We build camshafts kits from mild to wild with HUGE amounts of reviews & results posted here on ls1tech.com A good 224/228 cam with some advance on a tight lobe seperation would do what your wanting to do very well & make a solid 40rwhp gain!

Try L G motorsports they road race vettes, i have 02 camaro ss and have their g5x2cam and made 396hp to the ground with similar mods.

I have the ASA camshaft in my car and really like it. I don't have dyno numbers for it yet, but it really 'woke up' the car. It seems to make plenty of under the curve torque. I participated in a local SCCA autocross school and all of the instructors commented on how smooth the power delivery was and how flat the torque curve was.

Pretty much the case with any cam, but plan on doing headers, y-pipe, and an exhaust at the same time (assuming you haven't already). There is no point doing this cam unless you let it breath.

It also requires a tune, even with a six speed car.

Oh yeah, since you like to autocross, plan on getting some R compounds if you do engine mods unless you enjoy pain!

Thanks for the info. I'm digging that ASA cam, but right now there are no plans for Headers or y-pipe, so I'm wondering if it might be to much cam.

Thunder Racing sells cams that are designed around the stock manifolds, maybe you should check those out. The asa cam needs a good flowing exhaust to work well.
