Default Dart head owners please come on it!

I'm a regular over on corvetteforum. I'm currently in the process of installing Dart Pro1s on my 98. Several months back I posted a similar thread as this on the forum to get an idea of what size cam people were running with Dart Pro1 heads. The motivation behind this was to determine what size cam I could run with those heads without PTV issues before I actually bought my cam as I don't want to fly cut my pistons. So if you are running Dart Pro1s please post your specs so I can get the "warm fuzzies" about my cam. I do plan on performing the clay test but to be honest I would feel better knowing fellow members are successfully running similar cams as myself. Here are my specs:

98 Corvette A4

Dart Pro1 205 (stock/unmilled)

Comp Cams XR281HR-12
(228/230 .571/.573 112LSA - 110 ICL)

GM LS2 MLS Gasket (.053 compressed thickness I believe)

The only reason why I'm concerned as many of you are running cams a lot bigger than mine is because I've heard that Dart Pro1s have significantly less valve drop than most other heads. So what might be considered a mild cam for say AFR, ETP, Trick flow, LS6 could be considered a large cam in the world of Dart. Now I can't substantiate those claims as there doesn't appear to be any specs on the dart site about this but a few of the well-informed individuals on corvetteforum have provided me with such info. I think for the price Darts are awesome heads but it doesn't excite me too terribly much to think that I may need to notch the pistons for such a relatively mild cam.

I just installed my Dart 205's with TSP 233/233 595 595 112+2. I also used a .040 head gasket. I did not have any problems with PTV, close but OK.

Good luck.

If u are putting them on right out of the box and running .053's u are fine...
Just call Futral and aks John as he has done quite a few sets with no issues...

Look at it this way...
Say u had a Ported 243 and it was milled .030 u would actually have less PTV than a out of the box Dart

That's cool and frustrating at the same time. You're running the cam profile that I originally wanted to run but because its hard to determine what will work without testing and/or going with something you know will work. Buying a cam that might be too big is a poor investment as you only option is to fly cut the pistons or sell it as a used cam and take the hit. But who said modifying a motor was cheep?

Out of the box Dart 205's are 0.150 vs. 0.165 for stock valve drop according to what I found.

I'm running 232/234 646/612 112 with mine, no problems. Couldn't mill the heads due to overlap of this cam as I understand it. I feel like I'll be going with a smaller cam, possibly a PatrickG cam though. I'll see how it performs at the track.

I had mine milled .30 (59cc chambers) and use 040 cometics with a 232/234 598/598 112LSA (FM14 cam) with no issues.. but I also have -2cc diamond pistons too.

So far its looking good. I would be real disappointed if I found darts didn't support the cam I want to run since every other head on the planet seems to support much larger cams.

whats the deal with the dart heads and oil consumption problems? I have been looking into them and was wondering which ones had the problem? I run the dart pro 1s on my Big block chevy and they are great. I have had no problems or complaints.

Only oil consumption issue I was aware of was the ported TSP version, although there has been recent discussion on another board about the valve guide/seat alignment on bare heads. There has also been discussion on too large a valve guide such that it was opening the clearance. All I can say is from my experience, I have one of the first production sets and my oil consumption went down after installation.

I echo Vettenuts experience. I installed 225's in December and have no oil consumption issues. Those issues were related to the vendor that set up the heads.

Dude, you have a pair measure it.

Here you go:

Dart 205s: Intake: 0.150" , Exhaust: 0.172"

LS1 241 castings: Intake: 0.153" , Exhaust: 0.163"
