Question Different rocker arm/lifter question for you guys....

I'll give you some info on my set-up to begin with. Its a LS2 403 with patriot stage III heads(70cc), 248/252 .615/.612 custom cam. stock rocker arms and stock length PR's. So the other day I was jsut cruising along at like 20-25mph and out of no where my car started knocking really loud(thought it was a rod). I hadnt been ******* it the whole day. So I take it home and check oil level and drain it. I had plenty of oil, and no shavings on the plug. But I did find a needle bearing. So I was like ok, must be the rocker arms. I Pull the valve covers, and check the play in them, and look for a bearing cap missing or somthing liek that. Well I found one that I could actually lift up off the vavle spring about a 1/4". So I figured that rocker arm was shot.

So I bought some brand new harland sharps and bolt them all up. And all of the rocker arms are nice and tight except for that same valve spring. Still has about the same amount of play as it did with the old rockers. I'm guessing its a collapsed lifter? I am mainly asking to see if anyone else has any ideas? Thanks guys.

EDIT: Found the culprit, broken lifter. There are 2 other bad spots on the cam as well. And half of the lifters the springs were missing and they just come apart when i pulled them out. And the lifter bore, of the bad lifter, is gouged up at the bottom, and looks like there is actually a chunk missing at the bottom of the bore. Guess I'll need a new block. fawk!

spin the motor by hand with the valve cover off and see if that valve even thinks about opening. only other issue i could think of off the top of my head is an invisible valvetrain troll holding the spring down a little...

Pretty big cam, I would pull that rocker set and measure the amount the pushrod comes up to see if you are getting full lobe lift too. Just in case those springs aren't up to task and you have been banging the nose of the lobe.

Well, I jsut had someone turn the motor over while I had the valve covers off and watched the rocker arms. The rocker with all the play didnt move at all...never once. Nice...

Sounds like cam time. Good time to install a two piece timing cover. I cut mine using a .010 blade and used RTV on installation. Works like a charm.

Yeah I just pulled the driver side head. It is most definately cam time, and possibly pulling the engine time....ends up that the bad lifter is stuck in its little home. And I found a piece of the tip of the roller part of the lifter just sitting in the head. I liked the cam that was in there(248/251 .615/.612 on a 110.5 LSA) but maybe I can get patrick g to spec me one out for some more ponies.

Guess I'm going to pull the cam out, and replace lifters, lifter trays, and make sure the preload is right this time. I'm going to try and tap the lifter out of its hole and hope its not scarred. Drop the K-member and pull the pan and replace oil pump and check bearings/ect while im in there. Just sucks I havent even had the car back together for more than 3k miles! Pics to follow!

I just ordered some LS7 lifters, and new lifter trays. The lifters that I just pulled out are stock ls6 lifters.
