Default what is the biggest CI you can go on an LS1?

Simple question. Im either looking at a new motor should mine ever go the way of the dodo(sp?) or recently stroker/rebuild kits.
Is 383 the max you can go on a stock LS1 block for reliable performance( notice I never said cheap)? Ive searched around for a couple of days and I found one guy who was talking about a 396(which would be cool as hell) but many others felt it was a no-go.
Anything bigger than a 383 looks to be built using a 6.0 block, what is the reason for that?
Thanks all. Im really interested to know the limits of our stock alum blocks.

39x is achievable, but being an out of square motor, it needs to be built by a pro
Otherwise burning oil will be an issue

your the man predator-z, thanks again for the help with my little detonating issue!
Ive read that an over-square motor like that will be slow to rev and not rev very high? So reasonably 383 is really the max?
What are the stock bore and stroke measurments for an LS1?

youre better off just going with an iron 408... the cost difference is less than a few hundred dollars, and the extra cubes are worth it.

Don't mean to hijack but I thought with a 383 stroker kit you just lengthened the stroke, but the bore numbers you posted are larger too?

Could it be the honing that opens it up just a tad?

I've posted this a couple of times. I am missing 3.905 bore though...

Any bore bigger than 3.905 will require resleeving, which is why many advise to just go with an LS2 block at that point.

Yeap, otherwise run a fresh block and you get 382 ci

Ok so on an otherwise stock block, with stock bore, a 382 is it? So you can just reuse your current LS1 block, throw the crank and pistons in there and have a 382? Or is honing still required? How much more can you get out of a 383 than a 382, I would assume they were about the same as there isnt much of a CI difference.

Same 382/383, no difference.
If you have a used stock bore block, you'll need a hone. Along with that new bearings (main, cam and other goodies) in short a rebuilt block, the you get the crank/piston/rod assembly and the shop internally balance, clearance and blueprint the whole enchilada.
You will then be the proud owner of a 383 shortblock.

Price wise a 370cid is cheaper and a 408 is about the same price as 382/383. But you have the added weight 92lbs.
I did a 370 for budget reasons, if I had to do it again, I would go LS2 block with 4.00 crank for a 402 cid.

So what Im wondering is what I could do if my motor went south using my current heads. I know my CR's are a tad high but couldnt I just get dished pistons to counteract that? What would my best option be?

I have a 396 and it revs pretty quick. and I hit peak power at 6600rpm.
the torque is instant, and stays there, the torque curve is as flat as a table.
numbers are in my sig, that through a 3600 triple disc Vigilante and a Moser 12 bolt with 33 spline axles.
