Default Stock timing chain

My friend want to buy a cam, it will probably around .57x-.57x lift.
I's it necessary to buy a good timing chain or stay with the stock timing chain ?

Thanks
Adnan

The logic most heard is that "if you're gonna be in there, you may as well replace it". There are many offerings out there in single and double roller setups. I'd get a heavier one if it were me.

I decided to get a rollmaster double chain, but there is much controversy whether or not it is beneficial or even necessary to change to a different chain. I'd atleast get a new GM chain if I were in his shoes.

how many miles are on it? And would you be able to handle it if the chain broke? Thats what I would ask. Low miles, sure reuse it I have and many others, but then again there are numerous people that swear at stock chains and stick to the whatever aftermarketers.

I've got 77K on my stock chain, with about 30K with a .571/.581 lift cam and spin the hell out of the motor(6500-6700rpm) without any problems. Well over 100 passes still runs strong. Maybe when I get around to putting some heads on it, I'll buy a new STOCK timing chain cheers.

Your opinions are going to vary about what to do, I'm just showing you the longevity of the stock chain with a similar lift cam as the one your frind is going to buy.

salam oooly,
With that many miles change it. It's not that expensive anyways. Get one from Quatar. They are cheaper and well supplied at the dealer there.

I think that's best too. It's a lot easier to do it while you're there, and they are pretty cheap.

at some point in the histor of cars somebody broe a single...so they designed a double...unfortunately somebody with a big *** motor and lots of rpm broke that too...so they designed gears....
our cars dont have a gear design yet(maybe never will...too noisy for the knock sensor...and really not enough space for one)so a doubl is the next reliable thing...
many people have gone with the same chain...not even a new one..others like me..have a double...
I got an SLP double roller chain for $169 from MTI....thats pretty cheap piece of mind for a motor that will cost way more if it breaks. I'm doing the cam swap on saturday....and the timing chain is being replaced with the one I bought from slp....
I even say do the rest while in there... cam= springs/pushrods/retainers/timing chain/oil pump(slp ported blueprinted)/thermostat/sparkplugs/wires/oil/front engine seal.

It might seem like a long list of stuff...but your gonna take it of anyways to do the cam...why not put on newer and stronger....
I tell people...you wouldnt re-use an oil filter???would you??
I know its not quite the same... but pople get the point after that.
single/double???
it really comes down to your own personal piece of mind...if you are comfortable...then you made the right choice..If you gotta ask if its strong enough...then you should step it up to the part that you know is strong enough.

just my $.02

OoOLY IF YOU READ AROUND THE POSTS YOU WILL SEE BIG DEBATES ON T-CHAINS.
STOCK GM'S ARE FINE. BREAKAGES WILL HAPPEN BUT THAT IS NOT THE NORM (IT COULD HAPPEN WITH ANY PARTS).
DOUBLE ROLLERS TEND TO WEAR OUT FRONT CAM BEARINGS BECAUSE THEY ARE SO TIGHT. THE LIGHT SLACK IN GM'S STOCK PIECE PREVENTS PREMATURE BEARING WEAR. IT IS DESIGNED FOR THAT.
HECK LINGENFELTER USES STOCK CHAINS ON THEIR TWIN TURBO SET UPS (700+HPS). DO WE NEED TO ASK MORE??

I'd throw away the stock GM chain, even on a new motor. Too much damage can result.

They seem to break on downshifts.
Dropped from 5th into 4th on the highway, around.. 100mph and that was it. Goodbye valves...
I didn't RPM match by blipping the throttle, but I never do. I was at the right RPM in the powerband, not over-reved at all.

I do that all the time and don't care too much for softening the drivetrain or engine with rev matching. Who does unless it's toe/heel thru turns on the track??

If you have a manual and like to downshift, def replace it.
