Default How to tell an LS6

I have a 2001 Trans Am how can I tell if it has an LS6? Were the ones that made their way into F-Bodies 6.0L displacement or just 5.7L?

I saw some where that some LS6 blocks found their way into F Bodies.

LS6's are still 5.7's. Im sure a quick search will find you the casting numbers.

True...Some late model 01's and some 02's got them. THEY DO NOT INCREASE HP just incase you were wondering. the ls1 block is actually "stronger" due to the ls6 block having Bay windows for better breathing.

people claim to have seen bigfoot too... Its a myth.

there should be serial numbers somewhere one the block, you could check with gm if you want, but no fbodies got the ls6 engine.

Yes they DID! GM stopped producing the LS1 block and went to the LS6 later in '01 and many later '01-02 F bodies got 5.7L LS6 blocks. They were still built with LS1 rotating assemblies.

A good way that I found out was just hooked up my Hypertech to my car and it said that it was an LS1. So if you have one or a buddy has one just plug it in and it will tell you

yep, no ls6 engine just block. I'm wondering if I ended up with one. It doesn't really matter I'm leaning toward a 408.

1. All Fbodys have 5.7's, none were 6.0
2. All '01-'02 Fbodys came with a LS6 intake manifold
3. Something like 10% of '01 Fbodys and 25% of '02 Fbodys came with a LS6 block.
4. No Fbodys ever came with a complete LS6 engine.
5. The '01-'02 Fbodys equipped with a LS6 block make the same HP as '01-'02 Fbodys equipped with a LS1 block
6. The only advantage that a LS6 block has over a LS1 block is an additional main window for better bay to bay breathing.
7. In a high HP application, a LS1 would be more desireable due to the extra structural rigidity.

That is absolute rubbish!!! The LS1 saw production up until 2004, there were no shortages. GM changed the casting process/vendor which allowed some F-Bodies to recieve the LS6 blocks in order to not halt production.

Yup! This guy has it right. I can't believe anyone would claim the LS1 block stopped production in 2001.

Hi

Here is what i found when i was looking for the same thing.

The LS6 is a higher-output version of GM's LS1 engine and retains the same capacity. The initial 2001 LS6 produced 385 hp (287 kW) and 385 ft·lbf (522 N·m), but the engine was modified for 2002 through 2004 to produce 405 hp (302 kW) and 400 ft·lbf (542 N·m) of torque. The LS6 was originally only used in the high-performance C5 Corvette Z06 model, with the Cadillac CTS V-Series getting the 400 hp engine later. The V-Series used the LS6 for two years before being replaced by the LS2 in 2006. For 2006, the Z06 replaced the LS6 with the new 7.0L LS7.

The LS6 shares its basic block architecture with the GM LS1 engine, but other changes were made to the design such as windows cast into the block between cylinders, improved main web strength and bay to bay breathing, an intake manifold and MAF-sensor with higher flow, a camshaft with higher lift and more duration, a higher compression ratio and a revised oiling system better suited to high lateral acceleration. [1]

The casting number, located on the top rear edge of the block, is 12561168.

Applications:

2001-2004 Chevrolet Corvette C5 Z06
2004-2005 Cadillac CTS V-Series
