Default Water pump bypass or block?

I want to stop all the coolant going to my heater core from my LS2 water pump. My question, is there a best way? Can I just block the flow? Or do I need to allow coolant to flow from the water pump back into the water pump? Will I damage the water pump/engine of I just block the heater core lines and no water circulates ? Of course, the radiator will still be used and the water pump will still pump water/coolant to the radiator. I just want to install a shutoff valve in the heater core hose and not have to bypass the flow, I just don't want to damage anything.
Thanks!!

Most people just loop a hose there.

+1 I looped mine, no need to stop flow there.

My first post! lol.

I bought the looped hose to bypass mine and decided after lookin at it that it looks like butt so I pulled the nipples out of the pump (not very fun) and they are the perfect size to tap (no drilling) a 3/8" NPT and 1/2" NPT plug. Looks very clean now and no chance of a hose leaking over time.

I purchased a cheap aluminum high flow pump for like $50 off ebay to do this as I had to convert from truck to LS WP on my 5.3 for my supercharger.

Can you post pictures of your work when done? Sounds great!

As long as there is a small amount of bypass water around the stat, blocking is fine,,
If you regularly operating in cooler weather, its best to drill a 1/6 hole in the stat rim if it doesn't have one, if you don't typically you'll get spiky cooling, IE it goes up and down on too wide of a range. the less change in temp under normal running conditions the better especially for engines with AL Heads and Blocks..

Different forum but definitely worth the read. You'll think twice about the loop.

Indeed. I’ve seen too many guys just plug the holes, and it works due to the internal bypass in the pump. Similiar to the way my VintageAir setup closes off my heater hose during the summer, to stop hot coolant from entering the heater core. I had a guy on Tech tell me once that my engine would blow up by doing the VintageAir setup, because of the coolant hose block. Giggle giggle...

Interesting read, thanks for the link. I’d probably still do the loop. Seems some have it work better with, some without. Not really clearly defined. Good to know it is an option to try both ways.

I studied the diagram and the pump I have for the LS3 I am putting together. Thanks for the education. I erased the text of my above post as to not have erroneous info out there regarding this.

I've ran mine three different ways and never had an issue, They were blocked on my LSA supercharged LY6 for the first month and then looped for couple month or so then I hooked up the heater core, It ran the same temp regardless. Also ran a loop on my Son in-laws Nova with 6.0 and ran it looped when I put a 5.3 with a roots blower in the same car, It never ran hot.

Come to a state where it gets hot and try it again
it might be fine to loop it I was pointing out the design of the pump and what the best possible way to do it was.

You've obviously never spent a summer in Iowa lol. My Son lived in Tempe and said 115 there felt like 90* in Iowa, He couldn't believe how hot it felt when it was 105* here when he was home to visit.
