Default You just can't kill a coil...

We often get the question, "Won't the coils bake in there?"

We always reply ( like this ), "No, our test vehicle wore them for months in the summer without malfunction etc,etc..."

We want to be able to put peoples fears to rest, so we decided to try and kill some coils. We used an oven to bake the them at varying temperatures starting at 200 deg. F:

The coil was baked for 30 minutes, then the temp was raised another 50 deg:

We kept raising the temperature and forgetting about them for 30 min or so:

Had it set for 400, but by the time we got back from lunch it was almost pegged:

When the coils reached nice, round temp marks we pulled them from the oven (with a welding glove ; ) and hooked them up to our LQ9 escalade.

Look, I figured out how to work the camera:

...And couldn't get a misfire or CEL if we tried.

Any questions ?

Prices start at $595. That may seem like a shocker, but by the time you're out the door with Katech or Nasty your at $600-$800....and you can still see your coils.

Wow. Your right near Seattle. I might have to get those for my engine.

If anything those might keep the coils from getting as hot as they would normally from exposure to the heat of headers or exhaust manifolds. Its like a security blanket for coils.

I do know that heat can affect coils but it has to be extreme. I remember watching an ALMS race a couple months ago and some of the Corvettes that had engines built by a certain shop were having misfires constantly. They said that the coils were overheating because they were placed in a new area on the car that was causing them to get too hot. I don't think they were GM coils though.
