Question Highest highway cruising rpm for a 402

If you were cruising for a few hours, at what rpm could you travel safely without harming the motor?

3k? Higher? Lower?

Thanks in advance!

As long as it runs cool, I dont believe 4K rpm would be a problem.

RPM and heat kills motors (well besides freak accidents that can kill an engine while idleing), so by keeping it under 4k rpm and keeping it cool you should have no problem. 4k rpm is not really tough on the motor with proper cooling and lubrication (aka oil pressure).

Though if you had a car that was crusing on the highway at 4k+ rpm I wouldn't really call it a streetable car. Anything up to 3k is manageble and should be more than fine on any properly maintained engine.

Excellent. I'm only running 3.90 gears and I rarely travel at 2500 for long periods.

I was just curious if one were to drive on a de-restricted highway at +130 mph for an hour or so if the 3K rpm's would hurt.

Thanks for the replies guys!

Do not worry so much. My TBSS did 2600 rpm at 80 mph and i went from NY to VA with no problem straight threw.
Gas milage was not great but was not hurting the motor - totally stock.

You could go from NY to Cali at 4000 rpm on a stock motor and be fine, just depens on how you like your gas milage... lol

You'll be fine, really.

I ran NHRA/IHRA for 15 years and when I started out we used a two car hauler truck/ramp/bed combo with a 454 in it running 3500 RPMs all the way from town to town. Never skipped a beat and pounded out a strong 5 MPGs.

Back before the Overdrive transmission, Cars would be reving higher on the highway. Theres nothing wrong with cruising at 4000. As long as the engine is balanced good enough for it.
