Ly6 questions and cam swap
A friend just recently finished his s10 with a carbd ly6. Was a 12k mile pull out and in awesome/ clean condition. Idled amazing, purred like a kitten at idle to 3k rpm. Took the truck up the road for the first time, bumped the limited at 6k and it starts clicking and has bent a valve. Number 8 exhaust valve just slightly. Still runs fine just can hear a noise and valve doesn't come all the way up. Anyway...
Surely 6k isn't too much rpm.?
From what I have read all ly6 are vvt motors?
While it's out he wants to do a cam swap so do we need to change out to eliminate vvt? So far I have seen cover and cam sprocket? Anything else?Lifters ok for higher lift cam?
Thanks in advance. I can also tell u that the valley cover is smooth so I'm guessing no afm?
Thanks again!

No AFM. I would call the yard ya got the engine from and complain.

I was asking....'is it vvt? Is the cam sprocket and cover all that needs changed? Does the 6k rpm or vvt have anything to do with bent valve or was it a coincidence? Are the stock lifters in the ly6 going to be ok for a cam swap and more rpm?

all LY6 are vvt engines. yes top cam gear, cover, new cam bolt are all that is needed.
I dont know why you`d have trouble with a bent valve from 6K, I reved mine to 65-6600 with the stock cam and valvesprings, BUT I removed the vvt phazer, and replaced it with a solid gear. I never tryed to rev it hard with the vvt parts in place, and after taking them apart and looking at them closely, I never ever will mess with vvt if an agressive cam will be used.
fyi it ran best shifted a 6k with stock cam.
My lifters are doing fine, and I turn mine to 7200 on every shift. I plan to re use them with my new cam and it has a 7700 shift point.

I'm lost, what needs to be plugged into the phaser?
And I'm not blaming the vvt, simply asking if the vvt motors had different rpm limits and etc. The motor is a 2009 ly6, pulled from a 3500hd gas truck and had 9k miles iirc. Bought from a personal friends yard.
I appreciate the info so far, keep it coming

This engine was ran with nothing plugged into the phaser. Is this definitely the cause of the bent valve? Is there any other damage, can someone explain to me why the phaser not being plugged in cause these issues. We are in the process of deleting the vvt and just wanna be sure nothing else was damaged that we may not see.
