The guys I've seen running over 8000 rpm have typically gone to a distributor and a Jesel belt drive. I'm sure there are more ways to skin a cat though.

There seems alot of debate on this topic.

Our experience has been:
stock pcm shuts down around 8200+
bs3 with internal cam/crank gm ls7 block worked to 9000rpms with COP and no belt drive
We have seen a steady signal to 9500 rpms on the dyno with bs3 external reluctor/belt drive/ and COP.
Others have had a different experience. No 2 setups are equal so do your research and make an informed decision from a large sample of information.

I would look at the other systems avalible before pulling the engine appart. Others don't have issues with stock reluctors

03 corvette, 24 tooth reluctor.
If ~8000 was my max rpm I would stick with all the factory stuff.

Default Processor Speed vs Tooth Count

I have heard that John M. states the same thing about his BS-3, NO high rpm with the 60-2 (58-x) TW.

My ECU-882 family will run over 25K with a 58x (60-2) crankshaft Target Wheel.

The common knowledge is derived from processor speed vs tooth events.

Industry standard is 100mhz for the 60-2, the 164 he uses is 25mhz.

Thus when shopping for a system, check for processor speed.
