Default H/c/I vs. cam only benefits

Ok, the decision has been made to stay NA.....my 05 mn6 vette is at full bolton status now.....my question is, what are the benefits to going with aftermarket heads (tfs225) and a custom cam vs. Custom Cam only? I mean on a street driven car, would the heads make that much of a difference to justify the cost?

Benefits ?..... More HP and TQ from a smaller cam, which on the street means a more DD friendly cam, or just flat-out more HP and TQ from the same size cam used in a "cam only" setup.

At what point/size cam do you begin to out flow the stock 243's?

Almost any LS head that has been worked over will out flow a stock 243

Let's take the easy road. The only downside, as long as you pick a quality head, is cost.

What could I expect to see for hp/tq on an ls2 with custom cam/tfs225 heads/portmatched fast 102 and long tubes while keeping good drivabillity?

Heads are the key piece of any build, so yes they would make that much of a difference. Unlike a cam that only picks up power at a certain RPM range, proper heads usually pick up power everywhere.

As someone else mentioned, the benefit is that you can run a much smaller cam (for driveability and efficiency) and at the same time make the same kind of power as just a big cam only.

With my heads and baby cam I am making the same kinda power as people with a big cam only. Except that I have significantly more power down low and it's easier to drive and get better mileage.

Great thanks...I was just needing a little push to make the move. Brian Tooley will be specing/designing everything and eps will be doing the tune.

One of the mods...JayplaySS2 has a C6 with stock short block, TFS 220 heads, and a decent sized cam which dynos over 500 rwhp. I can't find his thread right now but to answer your question...YES heads will help alot !!!

In short, yes heads are well worth the cost when paired with a nice cam and full bolt ons. I took a similar path -- cam + full bolt ons and then added the heads & fast 92 at the same time. I went with budget heads to save cash for a N2O setup and even the budget PRC heads amounted to huge gains across the powerband.

If you're still running street radials, your next mod decision will likely be tire related.

I have been following "jays" build, very impressive! I am running a pretty sticky tire now at 400rwhp and can be tough to stick w/o some hot street/tires. plan to run R888's next go around as handling is of great importance to me being on coilovers now.

You're probably looking at $1500 easily for just the labor to do heads and cam, probably more depending on where the shop is located.

If I went with a 403ci stroker kit in the future.....Would a set of ported tf220/tf225 heads be to small?

We use the TEA TFS "As Cast" 220cc heads on 4" stroker motors all the time! They work great!

500/500 many times with those heads and a good camshaft to match.

They're very well priced and have the capability to be "opened up" by your porter of choice at a later date if you wished.
