Default 6.0L LQ4 or LQ9 how can I tell the difference?

I have a 6.0L iron block motor with aluminum heads that I believe was a truck motor but I am not sure if it is an LQ4 or an LQ9. How can I tell the difference?

The LQ4 and the LQ9 will be identical, the LQ4 being more easily found and usually cheaper.
Lq9 Block,eng (cstg) 12551364
Lq4 Block,eng (cstg) 12551364
L76 Block,eng (cstg) 12568952
Ls2 Block,eng (cstg) 12568952
L76 Block,eng (cstg) 12577461
L92 Block,eng (cstg) 12584724
Ls3 Block,eng (cstg) 12584724
If you didn't know the origins, the only way to tell the difference would be to pull the heads and look at the pistons. LQ9's had flat top pistons and LQ4's had dished pistons. The LQ4 has a compression ratio of 9.41:1 and the LQ9 had a CR of 10.x:1.

Found it from a thread I read Way back in 08.

thanks! yep that's the problem i'm dealing with, i have a motor but have no information on it's origins. of course, if they are the same except for the pistons then it really isn't a problem, i was just curious and i wanted to make sure all the parts are the same for both.

Pull a plug and use a bore scope camera to look at the piston tops those cameras are cheap these days and you won’t have to pull a head off

I'll bet BORE scopes have declined in price quite a bit over NINE years.
