Default LS2: Prime Oil Pump

Ok, so I've checked several threads on here and on LSxGTO.COM and it seems that some people say to force oil into the sensor-port on the front of the motor (above the crank), and others say that doesn't work since there's a 1-way check valve on the oil pump.

So how exactly do you prime the system? It doesn't seem right to just fill'er up with oil and crank until something happens..

Have you thought about using a funnel and filling up via the oil pressure switch at the back of the intake? Not something I've ever tried but given some time I'd expect oil to reach all the critical parts.

We use a canister that could hold about 2.5 quarts. We put 2 quarts in the canister and cap it. We then pressurize the can with air (it has a tire valve on top) with a valve on the bottom of can closed. Then we hook a line to the front oil galley and open the valve. We repeat 3 times (6 quarts). Then we loosen the oil filter and bump the engine over without spark plugs until oil comes out at the filter mount, this is just to avoid airlocking pump. We then tighten filter and roll over (still no sparkplugs) until we see oil pressure on the dyno guage. Then install plugs and start.
This process has worked for us.

Kurt, that sounds like an interesting idea. Is it a canister you made? Any photos? I could make one it sounds like. Any special fitting for the front oil galley?

Really interesting, I think I could make something like that out of a spare air tank. Thanks for the info & time =)

Anyone else have additional ideas? This could be a helpful thread.

Here's what the service manual specifies for this.
