foxbody mustangs for the win! haha kidding. howdy.
Hello,
slight introduction,
new to this site.
i frequent www.corral.net and www.svtperformance.com . I am into Mustangs, which came about in an odd Way.
i own a 1988 Mustang GT. just your average heads and cam 302 runs 12.0's
I bought my 88 gt in high school when i was 17. It was kinda weird too. I grew up HARDCORE GM. nothing else.
my dad owns a 1969 Chevelle SS 396, frame off restored, (father son project)
Mom owns a 2003 Corvette Convertible
so your probably thinking, why the hell did this kids parents let him buy a brand X car. The truth is? you got me? i have no idea to this day and its been 5 years, i showed my dad countless f-body's from 3rd gen 305 tpi cars to lt1 4th gens and a few LS1 cars. always got a NO after we looked at them, Then my brother in law told me about his buddy that had an 88 gt mustang with some work done to it, i thought what the heck ill go look, it ended up already having a heads and cam swap, (edelbrock rpms), and a few other things, I showed it to my dad, He said ok....... i said WHAT? he again said, ok. so then i asked my mom for the 4 grand loan, with the interest being i completly SOD the front and back yard at our new house, so that was the deal. luckily our yard wasnt too big. I ended up re-building the rearend with 31 splined mosers and a 4.10 ring and pinion. rebuilt the engine again, put a better cam in and got the car painted and did a LOT of things to the stang, then i needed a daily driver,
i needed a clean daily with GOOOD gas mileage, i went through a few daily's over the years, and last year i picked up this little car. a 2004 cavalier LS sport. 37 mpg. i was set. (or so i think)
well fast forward to last week, kid in my class says, "i need a car" i said buy mine, he said ok. i said WHAT? he again said ok. i thought w.e ill just buy another car whoopty doo.... he didnt hassle me on the price or anything, called his mom she said ok, now we are waiting on the bank to produce the check and its his, 99% certain this transaction will be complete friday. ANYWAYS.
this leaves me looking for another daily driver, another fox style mustang has come across my mind, a notch preferably, 96-98 cobra has crossed my mind, and the good ole 4th gen F body. My uncle has a 1995 Z28 M6 t top car. BONE stock with the exception of a new aftermarket clutch. has 100,000 miles on the ticker, pretty clean car for the age. said i could have it for $3500 bucks. STEALLLL. but i am a little nervous about the LT cars. . i have heard horror stories about Opti-sparks, and horror stories about reliability. even from former LT1/4 car owners. I know the LSx cars are just the king ****, Gm did their homework on it, my moms vette screams like a raped ape. So i looked into LS f-body cars right now and they arent in my price range currently, The 95 Z is way under my price range, and i know the history of it, its a virgin car, never been messed with or modded. which i REALLY like, So i snooped aorund this forum and saw its a pretty simple swap for an LS1 into an LT car using a speartech harness. I know buying an LS car the first time would be easier, but the initial price of this LT car is just toooo good to pass up. what do you guys think?
EDIT: i guess photobucket decided to do site maintenance in the middle of my post, ill try and post up pics of the 95 Z and see if you guys can give me a non biased opinion on wether this would be a good daily driver for atleast the next year or 2, that would be sweet, and let me know if that price is legit.
thanks, Justin.
EDIT: photos.
holy crap sorry for the length, but i wanted ya'll to get the story right .

from what i've gather they're pretty darn reliable, given the right care. of course if somethings abused, its not gonna be happy, but it sounds like you've come up on a good deal.
dont forget to post pics. and dont forget which car is the drag car! hah! then you'l end up with 2 project cars.
or, ls swap the 5.0 and keep the lt1 stock and just drive it.

I have thought of an LS swap in the 5.0. i just hate cross breading, even if everyone including ford guys know LSx cars are WAY better.. haha.
Photobucket is still down. dunno why. but car is a white t top Z bone stock. it will end up being a project car down the road, ill end up buying another "daily" driver

Very clean Mustang. With the price you can get an LS car for these days, I'd stay away from the LT cars. I've raced a few pretty built up LT1 cars with my cam only LS1 Camaro and it always amazed me (and them) the difference. Go for an LS1 car of keep building up that stang. Can't go wrong either way.

If you're looking for a decent daily, the Grand Prix GTP's pull decent mileage (bit better than an LS1) and you can put them in the high 13's to very very low 14's with about $500 in mods. My 02 GTP pulls 32mpg pretty easily on the highway (bone stock... tuned with a 3" downpipe would pull better MPG both city and highway, I avg 20mpg city). Only downside is is they cost close to what the LS1 cars are running right now (maybe ~1000 to 1500 less), thing is you get the comfort/convenience of a 4-door that's not hella boring.
Nice stang. Welcome to tech, and good luck with your LS1 quest

1st off nice stang, but as everyone else is stating its easy to find a lsx car for $5000- I picked up a 98 t/a with 96k on it for $4200 and put 12k miles on it in 11 months so far with 0 problems. So pretty much the right car is out there you just have to look.

Bummer that the driver side has some rust. Lt1s are reliable, I beat on mine all the time but maintain it, doesn't give me much trouble. I'm over 170k now.
Its true though, one guy had a 6 speed z28 for sale in the FL section not too long ago for $3.5k. Keep looking, you will find something with a LS in it. Hell there was a clean Quasar Blue Z28 LT1 car in the FL section for $2.5k, no rust!

Very Nice stang, I'm only on here cuz I'm rebuilding my friend's vette motor lol I have a 87 gt h/c/i and an lx I just got for 700 bucks with your rpm heads, cobra intake, f cam, etc etc....my friend blew the head gaskets, I had to cut em like .025 to get em flat again. Planning on turboing it when I get it back together and throw on a trickflow trackheat and selling the cobra....Let me know if you need any stang parts I got a bunch.
Good Luck
