Default Do I need new lifters with 977's and a 230/236 cam?

I recently heard that I might need/want to get a new set of lifters for the Comp 977's and a 230/236 cam.

If this is so...then what lifters do you recommend?

Thanks

I would contact comp for this one. I believe they make a lifter that is for their higher pressure springs. I believe it is the "comp R" series lifter.

Is that for sure...or is it just recommended??

Is there a model that I need...and who should I go to for them?

You dont need them, but anytime you take a stock part out, dont put the stock part back in...

you need them the 977s have over 400lbs open pressure. I talked to comp cam about these 977s and stock lifters/their OEM replacement lifters and was told they would not hold up long with that pressure. That 977s need Comp R type lifters. Check with any of the sponsers to the right. Thunder Racing and Tex Spd Perf are my two faves.

Agree. I have seen people try stock lifters with those springs and not get away with it. FYI, I don't run springs nearly that strong with my 228/236 cam.

Yep, the seated pressure the 977's give you is pretty high and the open pressure will really play havoc on the lifters, so unless you want to risk collapsing a stock lifter just change them now. It's not like you aren't going to have the heads off anyways to machine the spring pockets.

Stock lifters a 987's will work with that cam.

If I get the Comp R lifters...am I getting rid of the potential problems (for the most part). I know that something could happen...but would it be a worthwhile upgrade??

Mike,

If you ever colapse a lifter then the $200 for those lifers will be worth it since you'll need a new head install kit because you have to tear the heads back off to put the new lifters in. Plus all that time it takes to do it. I've seen people colapse them on a 224/224 .581/.581 cam at the track. If it was me I would run them, because personally I know I'm hard on parts, some guys aren't.

One more point that was brought up in other threads. The stronger 977 springs do have more spring rate and seated pressure, but that doesn't mean that they will produce less power than a lower pressure 987 spring. One thing alot of guys say is that too much spring pressure wastes power. I've never seen it, in fact i've seen heavier springs make power because they control the valve better.
