Does anybody know, have an idea of what it takes to pass emissions testing on pre-96 vehicles in Texas. I'm planning on moving back to Texas in the Austin and DFW areas and I want to be able to use my 93 Z28 as a DD. By the time I move the car is gonna be a 383 with 30lb injectors and a 255 walboro, 54mm TB, fully ported heads with 2.02/1.6 valves, true dual exhaust, A4 w/2800 stall, 3.55s, and a 112LSA .525/.545 lift 231/239 @.050 duration. If I have to leave the AIR system I will, if not it's gone. And I wanted to get rid of the PCV and EGR. Of course the tune to support mods. Can some LT Texans help me out with some tips? Thanks.

Austin and Dallas require smog testing, it wont pass. You would need cats and a smaller cam.

It's gotten harder, state troopers have really cracked down on it. Not like how it was before, I'm sure you still can though, right shop.

I was thinking about putting a serious electric air pump in the trunk and blowing a serious volume of air into the muffler or the cat to try and dilute the emissions.

well i happen to live in a saftey only county. its the only way i can get my car inspected.

It def wont pass in emission counties in texas. you better register in a non emission county to get a safety only sticker.

What are some safety only counties around the DFW and Austin areas? I do have an address I can use in temple, it's by Ft Hood and Belton.

A non smog county is apparently just a safety inspection, no tailpipe at all. I was looking on DMV.org and they give you a map of counties that are emissions counties and they show the county that emissions tests and what method they use. Apparently there are only like 10 counties that actually do emissions checks and they are around el paso, houston, and dfw. Form what I get from it is, those are the only places that will smog check a vehicle. Also, I can look forward to my car aging because after its 24th b-day I wont have to get inspected again.

What county will you be living in? If you take the car to get inspected in an emissions county, it doesn't matter where the vehicle is registered. It will get an ASM dyno test. All you have to do is find somewhere to get it inspected in a non-emissions county. The only way an inspector will know what county the vehicle is registered in is if he happens to look at the address on the insurance. And that only tells the city, not the county. Plus, an emissions test is 39.75 and a safety only is 14.50 You may have to leave the emissions equipment for a visual check though, depending on how hard the inspector looks at it.

yearly, unless you buy a new vehicle. when you buy a new vehicle the inspection is good for 2yrs, but then yearly after that. vehicle registration in yearly as well regardless if its a new vehicle or not...

any OBD I car (pre-1996) with be subjected to the sniffer (mandatory by law). any vehicle with OBD II is not required to be sniffed. they plug into the OBD II port leave the car idleing and do the test that way. however some shops go ahead and sniff OBD II cars. choose youre inspection station wisely...
