Default Why would a throttle body be ON the turbo inlet?

I was looking at some old pictures and one was of a Bob Norwood built front engine Ferrari drag car. It was a flat 12, tube chassis, turbo drag car. The thing that got me was it had the throttle body on the turbo inlet instead of the intake.

I under stand that all the throttle body does is act as an air valve but it seems to me the reasons of having it on the turbo inlet are, well, above any reasoning I could find.

Could it work?

Discuss, argue, and prove/disprove but try to keep it on topic.

I'm not sure. The picture is in an old car photography book and the captions says "altered locomotive turbocharger".

Even on a supercharger, I did'nt know the throttle body could be placed there.

Are you sure it wasn't a carb? Ive seen some "draw through" turbo setups where the carb is mounted before the turbo inlet, then it's just a straight shot to the intake manifold...

No way, it's nothing like that. I'm going to try to get a picture of it from the book and get it up here in a minute.

Here is what I'm referring to:

I think the units on the top are intercoolers. Alot of Norwoods cars seem to have top mounted intercoolers like that, so that's just my guess. I'm having trouble figuring out if it is a supercharger or not. You got me thinking Flawless. Even if it is a supercharger, I've never seen a throttle body mounted like that.

I thought those cars had TB for each cyl. And a large airbox that bolts over them. Mybe a boost limiter? Looks like a supercharger to me but could be a turbo. I would thing if that closed and any boost level it would hurt the charger? Right

There is no reason why the t/body in front of the turbo wouldnt work. Look at a magnusson supercharger. The t/body is before the compressor!

True. Maybe just a different way of doing it for one reason or another.

Upon further inspection that deff looks like a supercharger. There is no exhaust pipes to be seen; header or downpipe.

I saw his BBC Ferrari a couple of years ago in a storage unit collecting dust, right next to his Bonneville car (MR2).

Here is the same picture more clear

Thanks. The more I look at it I'm realizing it's a supercharger, especially with the clearer image.

I've still never seen a throttle body on a head unit like that.

Sorta, she doesn't like any of my hobbies (racing, drinking, etc) so she doesn't take part in any of them........She's still there for everything else tho......
