Front Plate???

Front Plate??? I'll be moving back to Texas soon and was just wondering if they still require you to have a front plate. Someone told me that they did away with that requirement in 2007 but I figured I'd check.

It is required. My girlfriend drives a mini cooper, and dosnt wear a front plate. She has had it 2 years, only gets stopped in small towns. Around DFW, she never gets pulled over, she will drive to Lubbock (5 hour trip) and has been stopped 3 times on one trip in the tiny towns

I went ahead and put mine on after years of driving without it, only because the cops around here (Lakeway) are notorious pains in the ***. Better safe than sorry. All in all, I guess it depends mostly on the cops in your area (I've never been harassed about it by APD, Travis County, or even DPS). But yeah, technically it is still required).

i have had it chilling on the dash for about a month now.but ive been driving around for about 6 months without it and haven't had a problem. but its not my dd so thats probably part of the reason i havent had any problems with the law so far.

there is supposedly a list of cars that are NOT required to have them on no matter what state you're in due to the fact that they do not roll off the assembly line with a spot front plate.....(Covers are not a plate holder) 3 cars I know that are on the list are: T/A's, Camaros, and Vettes...I was told about this by my Credit Union which happens to be a DPS credit union...I will try to get it e-mailed to me by the credit union or look it up.....

I don't have one on the front but I do carry it in the car and put it on my dash if I get pulled over. No ticket yet. Apparently there is some case law that states it just has to be displayed and doesn't differentiate between the front of the car or the dash. I will try and find it again and post it if I can

I've been pulled over more times than I can mention for this ****. The last time I got a ticket. Others were just warnings. Some buddies of mine who are cops say they use it as a reason to check for warrants and insurance. I personally wouldn't have it on my dash because the last thing I want at eye level in a crash is a thin slab of metal!

i live in illinois where it is also required, yet still mine is hanging on my garage wall hehe
like others have said tho, if its not on the bumper, a ticket is possible, yet left to the officers discretion. you can not remove or modify a front plate.

Texas Transportation Code § 502.404
§ 502.404. OPERATION OF VEHICLE WITHOUT LICENSE PLATE OR REGISTRATION INSIGNIA.
(a) A person commits an offense if the person operates on a public highway during a registration period a passenger car or commercial motor vehicle that does not display two license plates, at the front and rear of the vehicle, that have been:
(1) assigned by the department for the period; or
(2) validated by a registration insignia issued by the department that establishes that the vehicle is registered for the period.
(b) A person commits an offense if the person operates on a public highway during a registration period a passenger car or commercial motor vehicle, other than a vehicle assigned license plates for the registration period, that does not properly display the registration insignia issued by the department that establishes that the license plates have been validated for the period.
(c) A person commits an offense if the person operates on a public highway during a registration period a road tractor, motorcycle, trailer, or semitrailer that does not display a license plate, attached to the rear of the vehicle, that has been:
(1) assigned by the department for the period; or
(2) validated by a registration insignia issued by the department that establishes that the vehicle is registered for the period.
(d) Subsections (a) and (b) do not apply to a dealer operating a vehicle as provided by law.
(e) An offense under this section is a misdemeanor punishable by a fine not to exceed $200.
(f) A court may dismiss a charge brought under Subsection (a) if the defendant:
(1) remedies the defect before the defendant's first court appearance; and
(2) pays an administrative fee not to exceed $10.
(g) A court may dismiss a charge brought under Subsection (b) if the defendant:
(1) shows that:
(A) the passenger car or commercial motor vehicle was issued a registration insignia by the department that establishes that the vehicle was registered for the period during which the offense was committed; and
(B) the registration insignia described in Paragraph (A) was attached to the passenger car or commercial motor vehicle before the defendant's first court appearance; and
(2) pays an administrative fee not to exceed $10.
