A Y-pipe is what comes from the factory to go from 2 exhaust manifolds to 1 I-pipe that runs over the axle then splits back to 2 pipes. The stock Y-pipe was flattened on the bottom for ground clearance though creating a restriction. People buy Y-pipes to correct that as well as to fit to long tube headers.
The X and H pipes are on true dual systems to connect both sides of the exhaust for scavenging purposes. People tend to pick H pipes for better sound and X pipes for better power. I can't attest to how true this is as I've only used X pipes myself.

thank you sir! The reason I ask this "dumb" question is becuase im investing on a good exhaust but wondering what pipe I should buy. I heard good things about the X pipe. Y pipe is too common. I want to be different. How bout the H pipe?

I'm running an X pipe through the same mufflers as streetassasin, and it doesn't sound much different than his clip. Although his is louder I'm sure since mine are over the axle and his are dumped.

ms4 cam... pacesetter LT's into custom 2.5 inch X-pipe with 1 chamber race flowmasters..
none of these do the exhaust justice.. in person it sounds 10X's better..
cold start.. it was about 30 degrees out, lopes MUCH harder and deeper when warmed up..

Here's a run of mine. I have LT's, x-pipe and dynomax bullets dumped before the axle.

dude you should seriously go to http://www.ls1sounds.com/ It will help you decide on which exhaust setup you want. thats how I ended up with my Magnaflow. I usually hate when people say use the search button, but in this case I mean come on bro. There is a plethora of threads explaining what the difference is and so many people asking the same questions over and over and over. There is also a sticky at the top of this page explaining everything you just asked.
Im not bashing you in any way just pointing you in the right direction. Your car looks good too by the way. Later bro.

I myself have heard both X and H pipe dual setups in person, and I prefer the H. It tends to give off more of a mellow tone to it. X pipes tend to give off more of an exotic tone to them, which I don't like as much, as the LS1 already sounds hollow enough as it is. As for power differences, I doubt it would be anything significant. Two near identical cars with the only difference being H vs X, it would be a driver's race
