How do you lock a 4l60E in 3rd on the dyno?
This is my second auto that I have tried to tune on the dyno to no avail. I can't get these things to stop down shifting to second. I tried leaning into it. I tried high rpms. Nothing works. The first car I did was a Corvette and now a TA. What is the deal? I manipulated every trans table I could find but that thing just keeps down shifting when you mat it.

Ed/others. When you use the Bi-directional controls to lock third, can you still log the run? Some one else on efi live said that and being backed up by you and others on here is basically gospel. I am just not that familiar with the controler and I don't have the car in front of me to try this stuff out. I am assuming that I will start the data logger, get the car to speed on the dyno, then lock the trans in third, make the dyno pull, unlock the trans, then press the break button on the dyno? Thanks for the help guys. I should have clarified earlier that I am using Efi Live.

Don. Are you refering to the converter lock up, or locking the car in third?
Mike/Damian. I will check with the shop and see if they have a Tech II. I looked at HP tuners and it is just not for me. I am too far into EFI live now to change over.
Moe. Tried it and it didn't work.

ye hp tuners under vcm controls in the scanner... you can select whatever gear you like and lock the converter. you can also add or remove timing without reflash and all kinds of other things like keep the fans on between each run. i love my hp tuners!

I start pulls way lower than 70 mph. I like to start them as low as possible. Usually around 2 grand. Locked in 3rd, locked TCC.
Sometimes, if the motor is strong enough, or if the tranny is a little "iffy", it'll downshift, or blow through the TCC.. But, for the most part, once it's locked it's locked til you unlock it.
As mentioned before, the bi-di controls are great for locking in your timing, IAC, A/F etc. trying to figure out idle fluctuation etc. That and running the fans full blast between runs. Just open the bi-di controls, and start clickin around.
Same stuff EFIlive or HPT. Both will do almost the same things.

Is it advisable to lock the converter on a stock 60e?

If all else fails, change the calibration on the WOT TPS portions to not allow a dowshift. Then you can start your pull from 2000rpms in 3rd. That is what I do with some calibrations that do not respond to the bi-directional controls.
As for locking a stock 4L60E, it will not hurt it. Althought a stock converter's TCC lining will be damaged. I rarely ever see any gains worth writing home about, from locking a stock TC though.
