Default 1/2 or larger head studs. Machine work cost??

Whats it cost to upgrade to a larger head stud and how big are people going? This is a nitrous motor that will be seing a large shot and need the heads to stay down!!!!

Unnecessary. If you're worried about it, just o-ring the heads or block.

So you dont think if im pushing 400-600 worth of nitrous through the motor I need to step up to 1/2 head studs? Also with O-Ringing the heads/block which is better if either and what does that typically cost? Thanks!

I've done a lot of reading around here, and asked a few vendors.

I've come up to the conclusion that anything above a 300 shot requires AT LEAST 1/2" head studs, unless you want to be pushing water.

If you can get Shawn from VA speed to do his double o-ring deal with 1/2" studs. He has 2 tricks to get it to seal and not push a drop of water.

for what you will be doing why not go to a 6 bolt setup? much more clamping force. and more evenly distributed.

Parts numbers that I have are:
ARP AR5.250-1LB-----STUD 1/2X5.25 LONG BROACH
ARP 300-8304-----1/2''- 20 12PT. NUT (1)
ARP 200-8513-----BLACK WASHER - 1/2''ID

Sorry, can't say what it all ended up costing because it was included in other work on the heads and block.

I have sprayed more than a 400 shot and not pushed water.
std. size ARP2000 head studs with cometic gaskets.

If anything I would say go with L19 studs and a thick deck head and you will be good.

Ask about this in the N20 section.

I sell a few 1/2 inch stud kits and use them in high output engines for added clamp load. Some get by with std size 11mm studs at high power levels with no problem. The supercharged GM LS9 is rumoured to have been upgraded to 12mm for additional clamp force with the boosted engine. We normally get 300 to machine the block for 1/2 studs, the stud kits are 219 and up depending on application.

How about cost for machining the heads to accomodate the half inch studs?

Is it worth it to use GM head castings, with a 1/2" stud upgrade, or is the deck too thin (on say a set of 317's) for the larger studs to be worthwhile? I am building an iron 370 that will be a twin turbo setup, and I don't want it to push water at say 15-18 psi...maybe a little higher than that. I have a set of 317 heads now that I was planning to send out for port work...but if it's futile to try to make them hold versus picking up some aftermarket heads, I guess I'll re-think that. I have a bare 2004 LQ4 block that has just been inspected so far, hasn't been machined yet...and I don't think I'll be at a power level that will really validate using an LSx or other 6 bolt block...

I charge 75 dollars to clearance the cylinder heads for 1/2 inch studs. I also install ARP inserts in most heads to even out the load, this option is 150 dollars plus the "T" washers from ARP.
When using the GM heads, it would help a little but I would much rather use something with a thicker deck to have all the sealing advantage available.

The t washer or hat washer makes the head easier to service, but does not add any additional load. It presses in after the head is reamed to fit, keeping the top of the bolt hole from crushing down around the stud. I also do not use a washer when using these, so changing head gaskets at the track is easier as the "washers" are pressed in so they don't fall off. If you go to kurturbanperformance.com you can see a picture of the washers alone and after install.
