Hey guys trying to figure out what DSLR to buy. Seeing if anyone likes there Canon better then the Nikon etc. I had someone steal my bag out of my car when my ttops were off. The bag had all my camera equipment in it. If I go with another Nikon is the d80 worth the extra 300 dollars?

Sorry, but I would take a D40, D60, or a D80 over any of those... Nothing personal.

I don't have much experience with actual digital SLR cameras, but I was going to get a D40 because so many people have them and they perform amazingly well for the price (I got to use one once and took amazing photos). I know the image quality is higher on a D80 but I don't know if it's worth the extra money. Sorry...

I'm a Canon guy myself.

Nikon does manage to squeeze out decent cameras every now and then, but it's kind of a crapshoot sometimes in my opinion when it comes to their new models, so if you decide to go Nikon, make sure you get a tried-and-tested model that's been thoroughly reviewed already.

My bag consists of:
* Canon 40D
* Canon 300D (Aka, Rebel here in the US)
* 50mm F/1.8
* 70-200mm F/4.0 L-Series
* 16-35mm F/2.8
* 550ex Flash
* 420ex Flash

I've done tons of studio photography with this setup, and some freelance work as well.

I'd say that you should go Canon if you've really lost _all_ of your stuff. If you've still got Nikon gear laying around, stick with it.

Oh of course I would rather take a 40D but look at the price. $800+ for the body alone. Like I say, you pay for what you get.

I personally would rather have an XSi but $$ is usually an issue for the Average person.

Oh. Forgot the most important thing.

Whichever make you'll end up going with, don't spend all your money on the body.
An excellent body with cheap lenses will still produce so-so pictures.
A budget body (The 300D/Rebel for example) with a good lens will produce excellent pictures.

Yeah I like my 10D a little more than my Rebel. The body feels more stable but I only have one lens so kinda sucks.

Just stick with the Nikon line. You've already got some knowledge about them and know your way around them pretty well. Shoot me a call when you get back if you want to try my D60 out for a day to see what you think about it. My buddy that shoots for all of the Barrett Jackson auctions uses Nikon cameras only.

Canon 30D for sure..no nikon will take pics like the 30D. I have a 30D and its fuggin great. my buddy has a 30D as his good camera that doesnt come out much and he uses the d80 as his pos keep it in the trunk camera..Dont get me wrong d80 is a good camera but if ur buying quality 30D is the way to go for the money. I took this pic last night with my 30D not bad for no tripod and quickshot.Look at the stars..i swear this camera pulls light from saturn.Hope this helps. P.S i barely kno anything about the camera yet as i got it bout a month ago.It has more settings than i kno what to do with at this point. I kno a few Pro photographers and they all use only Canon. Also i have been told by many people that Canon Instruction manuals are the most informative out of all camera brands

Even though I'm all Canon for any gear I buy (40D for my DSLR, Canon L lenses, SD400 for my party camera, yada yada)

Honestly don't listen to what anyone says on brand preference, EXCEPT what was mentioned regarding any gear you may still have. If you have Nikkor or Nikon specific lenses, stick with the Nikon. If you have NOTHING, go try out the cameras yourself and see what you like in terms of feel (personally I hated the smaller bodies such as the Rebel and D40 cameras), menu setup, button setup, cost, package options, lens options, etc.

The brands are back and forth all the time and are fairly equal overall. Pick the best setup you can afford that meets YOUR needs and go from there.

Ok just got back to town. I'm leaning towards picking up a canon 40d, but how is the stock 28-135mm lens it comes with or is it worth buying body only and picking up a nice lens for 400-450 area (if this is possible). I take track pictures and stills of cars mostly as most know, I've been thinking about trying to branch off and stat shooting models with cars etc

That lens is very nice for the price you get it for when buying as a "kit". Its a $400ish lens that you get for like $200 in the kit (at least that's what the discount price ended up at when I bought mine last December). Once you get that lens, I would recommend picking up a super wide angle (in the 10-22 range) then from there stick with L glass. That's the route I'm taking and haven't regretted it.

I'd recommend the fixed 50mm f/1.8 lens as well. Costs next to nothing ( $50 iirc ), but it's super sharp and very "bright" because of the f/1.8.

For track-photography I usually use my 70-200L f/4.0 lens. 200mm is plenty if you get to stand next to the track. It's also very affordable for an L-series lens.

For studio-work and if I were to shoot cars+models, I'd either go with the 50mm or with the 24-105mm L-series with ImageStabiliser (IS).

The 50mm might seem like an inconvenient lens, but for any shooting where you can move yourself back and forth (i.e, negates the need for a zoom), a fixed angle lens produces superior pictures.
