can i put a t56 from a 06 gto into a 94 z28?
i have a 94 z28 with a rebuilt 4l60e, it has a shift kit and torque converter, and im still not happy, so i started looking at a t56, then i found 1 from a 06 gto, so will it fit?? and what is better a t5 or t56, i like 5 speed better but everyone insists on the 6 speed. so everyone's input will be considered. thanx.
also ima put all of this into a 89 camaro, i like 3rd gen. better. but before i pay 2 put everything into the 89, i want to know what should i do with the tranny. so i dont have to pay more to do the conversion.

the t-56 out of the gto will be different. the input shaft in a different length then that from the 93-97 styles. theres another difference i forget what.
also to put it into the 3rd gen with the lt1 you need a new crossmember, and i think you have to mess with the engine mounts. also theres the wiring, so on and so forth

If you can make the t56 work on the 3rd gen, do it!
T56's are STRONG transmissions and the 6th is also amazing for gas mileage unlike my A4
I generally don't like 3rd gen's as much as 4th gens.. unless if you have a beautiful IROC-Z..
GTO would be nice also for comfort, practicality..

You need the offset shift lever from an f-body trans., the front case/adapter plate from a 94-97 F-body trans., And a 1993 F-body input shaft for a 2.97 first gear box. When you do the input / adapter plate, you'll want to verify / correct bearing pre-load. That's it. Don't worry about the lower tq. rating of the MN12 / 1993 F boxes.
And you really should have posted this in the manual trans. forum.

Well in a race you don't really want to get into 5th anyway, that's overdrive. 6th is double overdrive. The point of the t56 is the fact that they hold a good power and can net you some really good gas mileage.
I really not sure what you mean by a lot of people have issues? My car now has 170k on it, I've changed the trans fluid once, I DRIVE this car HARD. Never had a issue with the trans itself. LT1 T56 with all the goodies should cost you $1200 max, a TKO trans is more expensive. The lowest rated TKO starts at $2k and that is just for the trans, its not coming with everything you would need.

There is a Lt1 t56 swap kit in the market place supposed to be everything to swap for 1200 before shipping I believe its worth looking into. I was checking it out but its just not in my budget right now.
