GXP Hot Cam Install-hp questions?
first off, hi everybody! *waits for the simpson viewers lol*
as my first post over here i thought id share some pics/experiences of the cam install myself and a good buddy did on his 07 gxp. although we've been into modding w-bodies for quite some time, and been working at a dealership for a few years, this lsx motor is by far the most fun motor to work with. not saying it was easy getting it in and out of the car, but the car is fun to drive and rips pretty good.
anyway, down to buisness, the bumpstick is an ls1 hot cam, probably common on the board here, its 218/227 .525/.525 112 LSA. the install was pretty straight-forward, ran into a couple minor setbacks, like the lifter trays not working, the cam gear being different on the 07 and up, and forgetting about the DOD oiling holes. (found what we needed thanks to some posts on here).
we also added a 2750 stall to the car, out of my gtp (i need to upgrade since it's turbo'd now). we ended up using the 1/8"npt plugs and a **** ton of grease to catch all the shavings in the block.
my question is, what do these cars normally dyno stock? how about 1/4 mile times? i know ive seen some 13.7's stock, 13.9's...what is typical?
anyway, heres all the pics i took, and a short idle vid. the car pulls very hard up top, even though it lost a little bit of low end torque.
balancer clearance! eeeeeek

stock we usually run 14.2-13.8 usually trap 99-102 mph.. Best has been 13.6 at 102mph and worst i've seen high 14's lol

G-tech time 13.78 @ 104 2.4 60’. That was K&N and a Zippy tune.
So your from Ottawa IL? I’ve rumors of a little black GTP running around here doing low 12s. You ever here any thing like that?

HAHAHAHA ya got the motor out through the top I think I almost killed myself when I saw that pic, that musta been fun atleast no vulgar profane words were involved in the project...maybe the beer helped next big project motor is comin out....
The cam being single center bolt was a surprise for me as well, atleast I know I'm not the only ls4 with a different cam.
with the cam I put down 278 to the wheel on the dyno, that was motor heat soaked and the dyno tune operator not knowin how to get my tcm to get over 6100rpm, every peek HP I hit was at the 6100rpm mark so no idea on what my true HP is but for now I'll say 278 lol. I've since went in and modified the tune quite a bit I'm still learnin a lot about the tuning aspect of this car though.
the biggest prob I'm running into is the fact that the cams power band is around 4500-6500, somewhere in that range give or take a few hundred RPM. Every time I downshift I'm back out of the power band :/ transmission is just so confused as to if it wants to be a family sedan or a 300hp racing machine
oh and great job good to see more people are out modding these car maybe just maybe the market will grow some for it

the stall converter helps out big time with the powerband, i think we will be adding some 3.29 gears (unless it already has them lol), using a single 7/8" drive chain
edit: yep stock exhaust totally.
mixerda, what cam do you have?

Hey, Couple questions:
-Do you have pics of what you did with the oiling holes?
-What was wrong with the lifter tray?
-Did you just use an LS1 or LS2 timing gear/chain set?

its an ls1/ls2 chain, with a 4x ls2 cam gear (gmpp part). the lifter trays from the DOD wont work with oem lifters....so we used ls2 trays. i have some pics somewhere, but i cant find them right now....
we just tapped the 8 holes, and threaded in some 1/8" npt plugs...
