how in the hell did I break my tailhousing?
Last night I was chasing down this xj doing about 100 this was on 95 and I hear a loud BANG! Drove some more then saw smoke so I'm like wellllllll I better pull over to see what's smoking I saw alot of trans fluid comming from the crossmember area but of course it was dark out so I couldnt really tell. I just put it up on a lift and sure enough the tailhousing cracked. Now bear in my I am on solid mounts and a poly trans mount. Is that 100mph burst is what could have caused it? How much am I looking at for a tail housing?
Thanks

Just my opinion, solid mounts and a trans mounted torque arm.
Picture this. Rubber motor mounts, remove the trans mount, drive.
The TA is going to move the engine and trans up and down pivoting on the rubber motor mounts.
Put solid motor mounts in, it's not going to move any more, but theres a lot of leverage working on breaking anything between the engine mounts and TA mount.
And IMO the trans mount isn't going to save the day.
So the answer to that is obvious, a tunnel mounted torque arm.
There is (was) a big transmission hardparts supplier in WPB that could get you a tail housing for around $80, be sure to mention it's for an f-body. That might run up the price because they are not as common at this place.
You'll get a pm from someone about that here too.

Probably the combination of poly mounts and harmful force from the TA caused it. It sucks that that happened. Hopefully nothing broke inside.
When you put it back together, I would consider getting a cross member that relocates the front TA mount away from the transmission. Or you can get a short, tunnel mounted TA, but this might create a little noise and vibration in the cabin. YMMV.
