Get a custom grind cam. They do not cost much more and you get a cam that works for YOUR application.........not someone else's application.
Asking for someones opinion on which camshaft to use is like pissing in the wind............asking on the internet is like asking 5 guys to **** in the wind with you........Get a custom grind.......at least the cam grinder will know which way the wind is blowing!

deciding not to go with a stall convertor really limits your choices to smaller cams. Probably a good idea since you probably also don't want to spin your stock trans into 6500+ territory (it doesn't like that for long). Smaller cams won't "thump" a lot either since that is related to overlap. Overlap comes from a relationship between lobe durations and seperation angles.. not often seen in small cams. imo a stall would be one of my very first mods on an A4. Even on a stock cam.
