Angry Electric cutout blowing open at WOT???

Is this a normal wear & tear item?

My "Summit" brand electric cutout lasted all of 3-1/2 months on a car that's been less than 500 miles in that same time frame...

At WOT it blows about 1/4 of the way open (or more) by itself, which I could live with, I guess. But, now it won't even fully open electrically...

On the bright side...

My car was absolutely no faster or quicker in the quarter mile with an open cutout, so it's not like I'll be broken hearted or anything, lol. I will not be replacing this POS electric cutout with another. I used stainless steel band clamps to clamp the cutout pipe in just in case something like this did happen. I'll just clamp the piece of "I" pipe back in that I SawZalled out and move on...

Live and Learn...the sucky part is that it was only a few dollars cheaper than a GOOD one.

The VERY sucky part is that it's warranty lasts 90 days, which ended 18 days ago...

I've got the DMH....4-year warranty!! It's worked great from day one and the quality was superb. If you decide to replace, you might look into them. Glad to hear you gained nothing with the cutout open....I've never made any track passes with mine closed.

I actually sent their Customer Service an email right after I posted. I even suggested a store credit as opposed to a new cutout, or a refund. I would hope after spending several thousand dollars over the last 20 years that they do something to make it right, but we'll see.

LOL...I'm definitely not saying mine was raced often with it closed, because I loved the Jekyll/Hyde thing with having a quiet Dual/Dual and an open cutout. I just know it didn't make any difference whether it was opened or closed...which tells me this quiet exhaust still works pretty darned good.

I still have the plate and 3 wingnuts that came with the pipe part of the cutout, but knew I wasn't ever going to climb under the car to remove it, lol. That's why I bought the electric part of it...

But like said in original post, MY car gained NOTHING from having an open cutout (except the cool sound at wot), so it's time for it all to come off, regardless of whether it gets warrantied, exchanged, or whatever.

my mccords do that every once in a while, the blade on mine is held onto that shaft by a few allen head bolts. and they loosen. i just tighten them every once in a while, but ican see why you want to replace, i relly do like mine, but if i had the option to get what i paid for that exhaust back, i would put it towards true duals

Same thing happened to mine before i put it away for the winter, it's a Qtp and like RedRallyeZ said all I had to do was tighten the allen head bolts and it's good as new, chances are yours were never tight in the first place and eventually just worked themselves out

You were the inspiration for getting my SLP D/D and like you said, it's perfect with the cutout. It's the best of both worlds.

Thanks. That means a lot, and glad you are happy with this setup.

BTW, like RedRallyeZ & casca2001 both said, the allen bolts that hold the butterfly shaft to the motor's shaft had come loose, so a simple re-tighten "fixed" it.

And as a big plus for Summit, even though it was 18 days out of warranty, they still offered a store credit, which is what I asked for. I was going to simply send it back, but I really do like the WOT open cutout sound at the track, if nothing else. Doesn't bother me too much that it runs no different.

Thanks for the replies.

Basically, a "Hybrid" system that anyone could duplicate.

JetHot longtubes
JetHot ORY
Dynomax "I" pipe (with Summit electric cutout)
Dynomax over axle pipe
SLP Dual/Dual muffler and tailpipes
Ebay dual outlet tips.

DMH huh? My QTP broke about a year ago and i just tore the damn thing off and put a cap on it. I really liked havin the electric cutout, but the stupid thing never did work quite right in the first place. I'd be interested in trying a DMH one tho. Where is the best place to buy one?

Thanks. It averages 1.59, but best is a 1.57(as seen in video link in my sig). That is with stock torque arm, stock springs, stock shocks, stock swaybars and boxed in stock lower control arms and panhard bar. 3600 PI stall, 342 gears, 3755# race weight. One wheel up everytime.

PM Bryan at Speed Inc (his handle is Bryan @ Speed Inc.)....they have free shipping on anything over $100. It's $179 for the motor, or $199 for the cutout and motor I believe. You can also contact DMH themselves, but they aren't a sponsor. Bryan is the man and will take very good care of you.

We have very similar setups and my best short time is 1.58...I'm not lifting any tires though....yet! Not sure on the race weight, but I'm stock Bilstein suspension all around, factory wheels on front and 16" TA wheels on back with Hoosiers. I really need some drag wheels . Glad you got the cutout fixed...there's nothing like a lopey cam with an open cutout !
