Default Help with crazy mechanic

well to make a long story short.. i have been searching for a converter for my car.. which is bolt on basicly..called a few companies and decided to go with a yank..talked to yank for a couple days and they suggested the ss4000..

my car is currently appart at my mechanic's shop...doing an engine replacment.. then found out tranny was no good... so i bought a used 4l60e from a 02 with less than 40k on it..well i bring him the converter and ask to put it and he looks at me like i asked him to divide by zero...saying that its gonna blow my transmisson and im the dumbest person on earth to run something like that in my car... then calls his tranny guy...

on the phone his brilliant tranny expert.. says he wouldnt even run that in his 700 hp race car.. and suggest with my mods so i dont burn out everything in my tranny to go with 2200 stall..and that a 4000 would just make my car slower...

just wanna see what everyone thinks on this.. and im not crazy for wanting to run a big stall on a bolt on car ?

sounds like you need to go to someone that knows something about ls motors and how much they love big stalls.

Well I dont know i would wanna run 4000 with a stock cam and yes the converter will put alot more strain on the stock trans at WOT in the way of more constant torque so the chance of failure will increase. However alot of guys do run 3000 3500 and even 4000 stalls and are very happy with them.
But it sounds like your dealing with a non performance type mechanic.

I would be worried about how your engine work turned out based on his stupidity.

there are lot's of guys here that are running high stalls as their first mod with much success. like stated before, not sure about a 4k but looks like it's time to find another mechanic

The converter will lock, You will however need some tuning done before all will work right with it and it may seem like its sucks at first till thats done , Just FYI

I agree with him to some extent.
With my 3600 converter it builds a lot of heat, revs IMO way too high at low loads.

At high throttle, it's way faster from a stop. Thats it, the rest of the time it's wasting gas, building heat, annoying as hell.
So you've got two scenarios:
Street driving sucks.
Performance driving, way better.

It's too bad I need the high stall 10% of the time, 90% of the time it's not ideal.
And thats me, my car specs and driving needs. Yours may vary.
Or my converter is too loose and it's just me.

Well I've run an off the shelf TCI Street Fighter in a RMVB th400 that I built, it was in a borderline street legal 1975 nova with a 468 big block. It seemed like the perfect converter.

Four years ago I ran a TCI Streetfighter in the car I have now and it was in it for a week because it was too loose down low.

I told the builder of my current converter this, these two converters and that i DID NOT WANT A CONVERTER THAT WAS LOOSE DOWN LOW.
I'n fact I'm quite pissed off because this god damn thing drives EXACTLY like the TCI. LOOSE AS ****.

The answer, oh just pull the trans out for the 20th time and well give it another guess.
****, thinking about this is pissing me off.

I could run the th400 tci down the road at 25 % throttle and gain speed quick at 2000 rpm (with a 3200 stall speed). The one I have now will hit 3000 at 25% anything lower feels like the brakes are on.
And no it's not my trans slipping. I can manually lock the tcc with hptuners and it pulls good. I got a sloppy converter period. That means hate it when I drive or pull it and try again and again and again.

i had a 3200 w a factory cam. it needed a bit more stall. now w a 224 cam, it still needs a bit more stall. i think a 3600 is prolly perfect for a street car. i think im going 4000 when i pull this one...

Ok, when you pull out in traffic does your rpm go up to 3000 and stay there?
Example: like pulling out on a 50 mph highway and getting up to speed in the same manner you would in gramas car.

^^^really depends on how fast i wanna get moving. i could SLOWLY creep it to 50 and stay at 2000 rpm but that would be hard. if i want to kind of move along briskly (like blend in) WITH traffic yeah it would sit at 3000rpms. it shifts and just stays at 3K, no rpm drop. its fun i like it but it kills my mileage....

There's a lot of "performance" guys that aren't familiar with the LSX platforms. They're old school where a 2200 stall is considered huge. I've been around that block several times.....I've been told my converter is retarded big and only hurting me. I've been called crazy for running a 4400. But don't listen to the naysayers. I ran a SS4000 in my bolt-on car and it was great. This 4400 is even better, and I still want more sometimes. Like stated above, match your combo and leave room to grow if you plan more mods.
