Also, did you remove the EVAP stuff all-together?
A bunch of people do and just leave the vapor line hanging there (some have done it at the charcoal canister, others in the engine compartment) which will cause gas vapors to freely escape.

it is normal operation for the evap to purge after shutting engine off. the majority of the fumes are usually absorbed by the carbon canister. Its really a judgement call if the fumes seem strong then I would look into it.

The return EVAP line comes into the engine bay and connects to the solenoid. This line vents vapors into the intake to be burned and if it comes loose you will have a pretty hefty fuel smell of your car. Also, as stated check the carbon canister as it's pretty common for it to get gas into it and then the whole system smells. Let us know what you find.

I am willing to bet I know exactly what it is. I had this problem with my two previous cars (Firebird and Trans Am) and they both ended up having the same problem. When you locate the fuel canister, there are 3 hoses attached to one of them. One of these hoses comes off the canister and attaches to a thin metal tube back near the gas tank. The rubber tube had corroded where it met the metal tube causing it to slip off on both of mine. Replace the tube for $.30 and problem solved!
