I was always let them soak in oil for a day or 2 , but is that enough?
Can you prime them if so is it a pain ? I only ask because i had some lifetrs fail on me and find myself second guessing .....well myself . So any tips would be greatly appreciated . thx

I've heard you should soak them in mineral spirits for a minute or two and work all the rollers free before putting them into the oil to soak. I really don't know if this is necessary or not, can anyone confirm/deny?

they should always be cleaned with the mineral spirits. you really only need to dip the lifters in oil before you install them. i just do the 24 hour thing because i can.

Morel specifically told me do not wash in mineral spirits or anything else. They are shipped with a heat sensitive grease that provides lubrication and washed out with hot oil. Preparation for installation may depend on manufacturer so I would use caution here.

I have a set of PBM lifters and they told me to put the lifters in dry to check what length push rod i needed for proper preload. Then it would be a good idea to pull the heads back off take the lifters out and soak them for a day then reinstall. I didnt like the idea of compressing my new head gaskets then taking them off and reuseing them so I got a pressure primer and pressureized my block to get oil to the lifters. Seems to work fine no problems so far.

For what it's worth my engine sat for 2 years without oil in it on an engine stand in my dining room and i didnt remove my heads to get to my lifters and they are fine. Perhaps you guys are only talking about new lifters?

I soaked the rollers and worked some oil into them per Morel. Then I dipped them prior to installation and coated the rollers with Redline Assembly Lube. I didn't soak them.

why would it matter if they are dry or not. your not supposed to extend the pushrod checker enough to push down the lifter.

if the engine will be sitting for a while with the lifters, wrench on the crank pulley and you will get some oil in the lifters pretty soon.

I soaked mine in oil until the bubbles stopped wasnt very long. My valve train is quiet.

One example would be to follow Katech's procedure, where the preload is set by measuring from the point where the plunger bottoms in the lifter.

Lifter prep is a different subject than pushrod length checking. The best way to check pushrod lenght is to use a non-compressable lifter. The internal spring can be removed from an old lifter & then fill the void w/ a nut & some JB weld or just about anything that will fit. Once dry, there is a lifter that will not compress & can be used for measuring pushrod length.
