Default contemplating drag car vs. street/strip car

idk which one to go with... i'd almost think it would be cheaper to build a drag car

here is what i would use for both

drag car
12pt cage
mini-tubbed
12" slicks
5.3
218/224 cam
good springs (155+ seat pressure)
80lb injectors
truck intake with stock TB with ground bumpstop (or build a sheetmetal one) or carbed victor jr intake and msd 6010 just for simplicity
s400 turbo with 1.32 A/R
W2A intercooler
Th400 with transbrake and 4000+ stall

street/strip car
8pt cage
10" radials
5.3
218/224 cam
shimmed Ls6 springs
60lb injectors
truck intake with stock TB with ground bumpstop
T70 with .96 housing
A2A intercooler
4l60e with 3200-3600 stall

now as far as rear end and such also depends on the kind of use i would be using the car for idk what car i should use im looking for a roller currently and would like to see some other views on my situation here

i currently own

5.3
218/224 cam
ls6 springs
ordering arp rod bolts this week and maybe a Turbo xs rfl BOV to start gathering parts for my build

setup would be front mount on both
2.5" crossover
3" cold side
3.5" or 4" downpipe
tial 38mm WG
turbo xs rfl BOV

As you said, building a dual purpose car can cost more than a drag-only car. The real questions are: will you get enough use out of a drag only car to be happy or will you want something that can be used between trips to the track? My Nova was built as a street-strip car with an 8-point cage and all the stuff needed to run 9s but could be faster/lighter/cheaper without all the necessary street stuff. Think about your goals and what it will take to reach them time and money wise, then formulate a plan. Keep in mind buying a roller or turn key car now is a good time since some people are hurting from the economy crisis.

Hey man. I have done it both ways and I always go back to street. I have been converting race cars back to street cars for people on my spare time. The last project was a 8sec pro-charged mustang that took me 7 months. He wanted to go NA and put in all the factory int with a killer sterio. He kept the, which I converted to a 6-point with drop bars. I also put in a 18 circuit harness and full exhaust. He says he wants to cruise it and quit spending $300 and more each night at the track.

just a thought.

From my experience most drag only guys sooner or later build a street rod or convert their drag only back as was mentioned earlier. I know three guys in the last 2 years that have converted/sold 7 sec cars because they couldn't stand not being able to use it with out going to the track.

I like to enjoy my cars when I get the chance so every nice day I'm out cruising. Are you going to be able to make it to the strip enough to warrant it?

High to mid 9 sec these days is a street car it seems like.

i completly agree with that statement right there....
ive decided on a stripped (no ac/radio/heat) street/strip car here is my parts list

street/strip car
8pt cage
10" radials
5.3
706 heads (i might port match them to my intake and have 2.02/1.60 valves put in)
218/224 114lsa cam )maybe bump up to a GT7 style cam with big lsa for sleeper effect)
shimmed 145 seat pressure springs
60+lb injectors depending on if i go e85 yet but im thinking i will so most likely 80's
truck intake with stock TB with ground bumpstop (maybe have it ported)
T70 with .96 housing (or bigger turbo idk yet)
turbo xs RFL BOV
tial 38mm WG
2.5" crossover
3" cold side
3.5" down pipe with cut out into 18" magnaflow and maybe a cat to keep sound down
A2A intercooler 4" core
4l60e with 3200-3800 stall (depending on size of the turbo)

If you have another car which it sounds like you do, go track only. I tried the street strip deal and all I kept doing was making it faster anyway till it was no fun on the street. I suppose it's easy nowadays with turbo's and blowers to still have a reasonably nice street car though.

Yeah, I see what you mean. I have a DD truck, Jeep and a track only car. Sounds like you want a fast street car then since you already have a drag only car??

That doesn't sound like a horrible idea. The bigger turbo will still allow you room to grow.

how much time does one spend at the track? how much does one spend in a street/strip car?

its a no brainer for me. i want nothing to do with a drag car unless it was purpose built to go rounds, be competitive, and i had a huge wallet to throw at it.
