I changed these things about 4 months ago.. pull wheels remove rear diff..
loosen bolt pull axles slam out bearings pack new ones with greese slam back in replace gear oil..

4 months later noise is back..

What would cause the bearings to go out....

I bought the bearings from autozone not the kit but the other ones..

used mobile1 bearing greese and also mobil1 syn "dumb" for the gear oil..


took it to chevy "dont know y" figured it wouldnt be that expensive..


400 if its the wheel bearings they say and if something is causeing them to go out then mabey more.

I know i did this in my driveway for 70 bucks..

any clues to what makes these go out or did i do my last install wrong???

found your problem. rear axle bearings only need to be coated with gear oil when installed. They are lubricated by the diff fluid clinging to the axles. the grease created a bearier and prevented the bearings from being lubricated. When you replace them again also make sure your axles arent gnarling from the bearing if they are u need axle savers or axles

wow might be awhild before i can get to them.. how long you think it should be safe to drive on them its raining all week here..

Greasing the bearings didn't kill um.......reusing the old axles did. You gotta replace both the axles and bearings. Good Luck

You could possibly have a bent axle. Happened to me once. And an axle can get bent just by barely bumping a curb. I did it going through a parking lot.

Also when you pull the axles look at where they ride on the bearings.....if they are pitted up there is your problem.

and if they are not pitted then its just the bearings... hopefully..


anyways can you buy axles from autozone?? or do i have to get them elsewhere??

Trust me those axles are TOAST if the bearings are bad. Find good used ones online or be willing to spend 200 min each at the dealer. also if you have 4 channel ABS you need axles with the tone ring.

if the axles are screwed I would just look on here to find some good used ones or go to a junkyard. DO NOT go get ripped by the stealership.

Worst case scenario you can buy aftermarket stronger axles from Moser or one of the other sponsors for less than the dealership.

oh yea i know that for a fact I just thought that it wouldnt be that much because i did it before my my yard in like 2 hours.. but damn i was wrong.. and im wondering how are you sure that my axles are toast.. you got me now where i dont even want to take this apart untill i have the money for new axles.. kinda sux.. cause if it isnt the axles then i can do it tomorrow but if it is then im screwed this is my only car.

You don't really have to buy new axles...you can buy offset axle bearings. They ride about 1/4" further out instead of on the spot where the other bearing tore up the axle. Some people don't like them, but they work OK.

Sorry but it will just fail again...those axles are the problem to start with. Moving the bearings is not going to fix it. Do it right, buy some good used axles and new bearing and be done with it. Otherwise you will just be dong it again in a few months. BE SURE to carefully clean the axle tubes!

Why not just buy a good used rear end? They are plentiful on this site and others. Add up the cost of new axles/bearing/oil and then compare to that of a used rear end + oil. I know they can be had for 200-350$$. Just a thought.

I have one (1) good used stock axle if you want it...the other one has bearing damage. This is for an ABS/TCS car, so it has the aluminum tone ring on it.
