Default Easiest way to get U Joints OUT!!!

I am trying to get my ujoints changed...trying to get them out...any tips on how you guys get them out...they are a real PITA...i have never had a problem with getting them out before...i usually use a big clamp and press them out...but thats not working...is there something i'm missing..is there something holding them in? Let me know.

Am not sure which joints you have, but there are u-joints that you need to melt the urethane/plastic retainer in order to get them out (torch).

If you have a big-*** vice, you could try that. If you don't, it might be a good time to buy one.

Alternately, you could get them quickly pressed out at any local shop for just a couple of bucks...if they even charge you.

Default ujoints

thanx for the help..they were the factory joints...188,000 miles on them...they had to be torched to melt the urethane out...came out easy after that...thnx again guys..

Can melting the nylon inserts out be done with a hand held propane torch?

Yes, you can use a torch.
The pyro in me usually starts a fire in the pit, and just turns the D/S until you see the plastic start squirting out.

I usually just cut the u joint inside of the caps with a die grinder and cut off wheel, pull the center out and punch the caps out.

Got the u-joint out. There is some leftover plastic in the flange. I started to get all of that out and then thought that might be the only thing keeping the u-joint in there. There are no snap rings like I am used to seeing. Is it okay to remove the plastic and if not what do I put back in there?
