Default Wow. Houston we definitely have a problem

So my brothers motor (02 TA) took a dump a week or so ago and we thought the timing chain had snapped. Not sure yet if that was done too but we have another problem. We got the heads off today and noticed on the 5 cylinder there was valve marks all over the piston, seven marks total so we were thinking somehow it was spinning in the cylinder. Then off to the passenger side head. I took it off and the 6 piston was...well...take a look for yourself.

My brother literately just pulled it right out with his hands. I couldn't believe it when I saw it. We are like 99% sure the block is trashed too by looking down in the cylinder. So now off to find a shortblock...anybody know of a good place to find one?

How bad did it scar the cylinder? It may be able to be bored out. Stock is 3.898 and he could make it a 347 (3.905). So the block may be re-usable.

It looks pretty chewed up at the bottom but we are definitely going to see for sure before we buy another one.

We looked a little deeper and the 5 and 6 rods are snapped in two. I've never seen this happen before. I'll try to get pics of the rod tomorrow. It looks wicked.

Nothing out of the ordinary. It's a bolton car that isn't raced and not driven hard very often. He says he's missed third a few times and hit the rev limiter but like I said nothing that we think would have done this. It must have just been ready to go. I guess it's a good thing this happened now though he was just about to have some heads ported and put a cam in too. Now he needs a new motor.

Ha bad batch of rods and a bad piston I presume. We are probably just going to try and find a shortblock. I'll def get that pic of the rod it looks nasty.

probobly a stupid question but what kind of shape were the valves in on the corresponding cylinders? if the timing chain broke those two pistons might have hit the valves thus breaking the rods and pistons..... especialy if you have hardened pr's

All the internals were stock along with the pushrods. The valves look like they haven't been touched. I'll go outside and snap a pic of the rod you can see...or at least what's left of it.

But the valves have definately been touched by the pic you provided.

It might be cheap insurance to do heads or at a bare minimum get your brothers current heads checked out. Those gouges on top of the piston look like they could have caused a bent valve or two

Yeah the plan was actually to take them off and have take them to Lloyd's for porting and what not yesterday but after we found all that good stuff we held off on that. But yes I agree that there is a good chance the valves are bent.
