I've driven a 4.8, it feels great for just 293 ci. It likes to stay in the top half of the rpm range when you're not cruising for mileage, so you'll need to spend the money you save on deeper gears.
The stock cam specs as 191/190 degrees duration at 0.050", 0.457/0.466" lift, 114 degree lobe separation. Comp Cams offers one that doesn't require tuning the ECM, 206/212 on a 115, lift around .500"
These 4.8s are rated 290 ft-lbs at 4000 versus the 5.3 at 325 ft-lbs at 4000.
The LS4 is aluminum block, can be bored to 5.7L, comes with LS2 heads, and can be had for $1400. The catch is the crank snout is shorter, and similar minor differences at the rear of the block, but the LS1-pattern of bellhousing holes is still there along with the FWD pattern.
Still, helluva great price, just swap in an LS1 crank and pistons. Or go stroker.

Yes they are good engines.
Besides the obvious disadvantge of diplacement.
The same mods that you do to any other LSx you can do to a 4.8..Just with diminished returns.
I'd like to see what could be coaxed out of a little 4.8 actually.

Funny you should type that. The now-defunct Wheel-to-Wheel Performance put a turbo on a stock 4.8:
493 tq @ 2500 rpm
603 tq @ 4400 rpm
542 hp @ 5200 rpm
513 tq @ 5500 rpm

so if i got the 4.8 $300 dollars cheaper then the 5.3 would you go with the 4.8 or no

how much is it to make a stroker 5.3 or 4.8 and what would they be if they were strokers

There are other factors to consider.
How complete is one versus the other ?
Age?
Mileage?

Both are great deals to be honest.

What is the weight of the vehicle? what transmission are you using?

Where are you located? I'd take whatever one you don't choose

I would go with the 5.3 for a lil more grunt, on the TQ side, to push around that 3200lbs. The 4.8 will just have to work harder w/ less cubes.

that's what i was thinking, I just really want a all alumn engine so it's hard for me to decide what to do what is the weight difference to a 5.3 cast iron to alumn

automatic??? If it is automatic i wouldnt worry about the engine size so much because a good quality stall converter will take care of any torque issues. Id pick the better deal and lower mileage engine... just something to think about. Id pick a stall with a perfect cam to peak the torque at the stall speed. I doubt youd notice a difference between the 4.8 and 5.3 in this application. If your budget limits your choices id definitely go stall and quality transmission cooler before cam with EITHER engine.

auto with a 3200... sounds good. if it were me and i didnt want to pay for the 5.3 id grab the 4.8. ultimately the 5.3 will be better, but by how much is debatable.. its up to you to decide if its 200-300 dollars better. If you dont have the extra cash 200-300 dollars could go to other parts.
