Default Copper spray on stock MLS head gasket?

Is this the way to go? I've heard of this before but not on a MLS gasket.

What is the purpose? Does the stock MLS gasket need help sealing, or does the copper spray just add that much more sealing power?

That is what the shop that built my car routinely uses, however it was a 3800 with MLS gaskets.

Typically it's not necessary, usually people use it on copper gaskets to help seal if the block/head surfaces aren't perfect. I don't know if it would help with a MLS gasket.

I tried it on my old 347 setup. The copper spray didnt seem to make a difference at all. It still lifted the heads just as easily..

I did it just as a little added security with my cometics. My deck had been resurfaced and everything and new heads. Probably wasn't necessary, but I can't see what it would hurt. The only thing was when I did mine I had a fairly small garage and got overspray on my car. Had copper sparklies all over the passenger side. Nothing a little claybar didn't fix LOL

Can easily argue its not needed since the factory didn't use it.

I agree, but I still wonder if there are hidden advantages. My heads are new but my block did not need to be surfaced - so maybe I should use it.

my theory is that it cant hurt so why not try it,it could however help and keep you from lifting heads as easily

i dont know what it costs but im sure it isnt so bad that it isnt worth a try

i know i would pay quite abit if it means i dont have to take my heads off again

If your heads are lifting a layer of copper coat isn't gonna help. Better head studs, thicker deck head, orings, correcting tune issues will help.

The spray is about 7 bucks at the parts store, I say it can't hurt. I used it with my heads and stock MLS gaskets. It just helps the gasket seal though, won't help with lifting heads.

If something leaks and you need copper spray to fix it, I would want to fix the issue and not band aid it, IDK, JMO..

You make it sound like he wants to tear down the motor and spray old gaskets with it.... Its just extra insurance to reduce the risk of having to change gaskets a couple thousand miles down the road.

No, it's on a new motor - infact I just finished torqueing the heads down, with the copper spray on new stock MLS HG's. I'm running studs also - I don't want these heads moving under the 10psi I'm going to put to it - I know it's over kill, but cheap insurance is how I look at it.

Of the subject - the ARP instructions say 80 ftlbs for these studs - should I go more than that? On my Cummins I know that I went to 110 instead of what the instructions said was supposed to be 90. ?????

Not what I was saying at all. All I'm saysing is a MLS gasket or any other gasket on a LS1 engine doesn't need it, not saying anything wrong with it, you do what your comfortable with.
