Default Locked Tune

Had a customer come in the shop the other day with a PCM that had been locked by another tuner. I have the ability to unlock PCM's and thought I would share with everyone what I found behind the 'locked door'.

Please don't ask me the name of the other tuner. I won't divluge it to keep the shitstorm to a minimum...

Was the VE or MAF tables changed or just the PE table hacked?

Looks like a supercharged car with a huge cam that wont idle under 950 rpms..

The computer needs a crank relearn done on it. All that data is empty for some reason in the Bin. No learned info is stored for some reason..

that thing is going to die if it ever looses the MAF!!!!
Oh Well, I guess people need to learn. Ah hah, I found how they are getting around the PE, look at B3606. 12.947. It won't go any richer than that, no matter how hard they try.

I'm still convinced that anybody who tries to lock a tune just has something to hide.

I used to say the same thing and then I had 2 CUSTOMERS that wanted their PCMs locked... They were both Vette owners and neither one wanted the dealership screwing around in there.

I have had the same thing happen where customers specifically wanted their PCM's locked to keep the dealership out of it. In this case however, this customer went to the tuner and the tuner drove his car around for a little while, said he couldn't get it right because of a broken sparkplug and took $450 for his time... He in no way, shape, form, or fashion told the customer that he had locked his PCM. The customer only found out when he brought the car to me to be tuned after replacing the motor. When the customer called the tuner, the tuner told him he wouldn't unlock it unless he came back to him. He further stated that he locked the tune because he didn't want his work being copied. If I hadn't heard the conversation I would probably not posted this here. I am not making any comments on the 'tune' or 'tuner', just showing everyone what is behind the mystery. Anyways the lock isn't going to keep me out anyways...

The only other legitimate reason I can see for a lock (which is the ONLY reason I ever locked any PCM's, unless the customer requested it) is if you have built a motor for someone with a warranty. If the customers goes in and modifies your tune to the point of damaging the motor and then wants warranty coverage...that is a big issue.

yes, that is a good point Frost, sometimes you need to lock a pcm, to protect the customer from themselves.

Oh, I just added 4 degrees of timing, and leaned out the airfuel, it pulled great at the track. Your going to warranty this #7 piston failure right? since you tuned it
edit, looks like we posted at the same time.

Mark for reference in your notes.
B3606 does not limit the minimum amount of commanded fuel while in Cell22 or Pe mode..

B3606 is used to tell the computer what value to be limited at while the vehicle is in hot mode. Usually set at 270F degrees of coolant temperature or higher. That is the only time that value is used. The value is user defined by B1601.

For proof of concept a stock car will show a commanded of 11s and that is richer than the value in B3606 which is stock in that table of this cal.

As for Maf going bad and potential for failure, Yes that would be possible as the Backup ve table is going to be used and should have been copied over from the main ve table for protection.

That is a jacked up tune for sure. I'm sure the tuner didn't want somebody stealing his ideas. What he didn't realize is that he was doing the world a favor by locking them, LOL. The curtain has been pulled back and the emperor has no clothes! Very embarrassing!

The thread wasn't created to figure out "who" the tune was from, but rather what not to do and for others to learn IMO.
