Great question -- that old muscle car sound was precisely what I was shooting for. My setup works -- the first comment I usually get from people that see my car for the first time is something to the tune of "how in the heck did you get it to sound like an old muscle car".
I went with Hooker Long Tubes, off-road y to Flowmaster catback with a cutout in the intermediate pipe. Tossed a moderate cam on a 112 LSA in there and immediately got the sound I was looking for. I typically only keep the cutout 50 - 70% open -- it gives me plenty of volume, however keeping the blade only partially open helps cut out the rasp.

When I had dumped 24 inch glasspacks with no crossover and my cam in sig it was so deep and bassy I'm suprised I didn't shatter windows.. Now it has an H pipe out the back and its still like that but not as bad.. The guys love it.

Part of it is firing order, part is how / if you merge
the streams. Old school you had
pop-pop_______
_______pop-pop
pop-pop_______
_______pop-pop
because the firing order was 2 left, 2 right.
And "old school" often was shade tree exhaust,
straight out with no (or marginally effective H)
crossover while ours are a merged Y that nearly
totally merges the pulses into a single train.
