**** buying a tool. just get a sharpie and mark the top of the valve. and put it together and turn it over with the starter for a few seconds. then take the rocker arm off and check to see where its wearing. should be right in the middle. i have an old lifter i took all the hydraulics out of and made solid. to check this with. but if you havent put longer valves in or use a small base cam then youll be really close. sometimes decking the block and millings heads and variances in head gasket effect the pushrod length. but im sure youll be good.

You say "**** buying a tool." Yet the link you posted requires that you use one. Do you see why I'm correcting you? If you can't check the pushrod length, what's the point in using the sharpie method? What happens when the mark on the valve tip is too far forward? How long will the pushrod have to be to center the mark on the valve tip? Are you supposed to guess? I've used this method on my own engine, so I'm no stranger to sharpies either, bud.



I'm not trying to be an *******...seriously. I'm all about helping people too, by giving them the whole story. But how exactly would you verify and adjust valvetrain geometry without measuring?

I use my sharpie to cover over the fading on the outside door locks and other metal/plastic surfaces. Not for measuring PR length

Wow dude...what's your problem? I'm asking you a serious question. I'm sure your "****" runs fine. I measure pushrod length with a checker tool, on my own engine, that I built.

I'm asking this - How do YOU verify pushrod length without a checker? What's so hard to answer?

Man what rage in a simple topic. FWIW many engine builders i know have purchased a pushrod length checker of some kind and USE them.

i like to check my valvtrain with the actuall parts i will be using. not a plastic tool. do it your way. but dont condemmine. but if i was him i would throw one intake and exhaust rocker arm and pushrod on there and check it with what i got. if its right you save alot of time and money. if its wrong then you should have enough common sense to know what size you need to go to. i just thought i would throw it out there how "I" do it. seems to work great for me.

So you can tell exactly what length your pushrod needs to be (.05", .10", etc.) shorter/longer by just looking at the swipe pattern?

uh. yes. but usually you can get it close by knowing what you have. if you have a stock engine with .100 longer valves then guess what. you need .100 longer pushrods. its not rocket science. it seems like you guys are making this out to be harder than it needs to be.
