From what I have read, those TRW forged pistons are pretty stout. I read in a Car Craft magazine awhile back they sprayed I think a 400 shot on a budget rebuild Chrysler 440.

I have a question for you, how many RPM's are you plannning to turn? When do you need splayed caps? I am building a 355 when I get back.

Well it probably should get splayed caps but, from what i hear the 2bolt can take a beating and the majority of failers are pistons or rod bearings. Ill be building a 396 with splayed caps, or if its not to crazy Ill have them done to this block b4 it goes in.

I hear of lots of guys spinning bearings when they rev their engines with head and cams kits. I just want to avoid that with my build. I didnt know if thats just the way the stock bottom ends are or if the splayed caps helped or what, or if its just better aftermarket bearings.

That's from poor work on their part, letting dirt get into the engine, ect. My car has had 3 head swaps and 4 cam swaps that I know of and it's hit the 6700 limiter more times than I can count.

I never understand when it says "10-1" pistons on a shortblock, when the cylinder head plays a huge part in determining compression ratio. You need to get a part number off of those pistons to find out exactly how much cc's of valve relief their is, and then you can determine the compression ratio from there, assuming you know what head gasket you are running.

Im sure it happens, but pretty much depends on the parts you choose and the condition of the motor.

Would you guys feel comfortable spinning a new GM LT1 stock shortblock to 6800? Lots of good deals floating around on new GM shortblocks 2 and 4 bolt main.

I got a great great deal. he started at 2000, with a cam and bone stock heads. I told him to keep the cam and heads & ended up paying $800+ a bare short I was gonna build my 396 with. Now I can just swap this one in and use my factory block for the 396.

4bolt mains are WAY better but the majority of spun bearings are ROD bearings because the factory rod bolts stretch at higher RPMs.

Oh Im sure that my factory block would go 10s easy, but not for very long spinning to 6800. This is for pc of mind and going with a bigger shot than the factory pistons can handle.

Jolster,
I beleive the compression is measured of a factory stock head. Lloyd thinks this will work perfect fo what I want to do with it, and Ill be using
MR G 5716s wich are .026.

As soon as my clutch arrives Im sure Ill pop a tire up. It almost pulls one on the stock clutch leaving at 4500, street twin and a 6k dump im sure it will lift up.

2 bolts are good if the motor is built properly. The 96 I had with a 383 S/R setup went to 7K RPM and a 200 shot. The car was 3500ish lbs and went 9.7@138 7 years ago.

never broke!

Mike spray this setup now and have that motor ready
