Default '93 T/A 4L60 or 700R4?

Just a quick question...did the '93 LT1s have 4L60's or 700R4's? Or are they the same...the 4L60E coming later? Kind of a tard when it comes to transmissions...sorry.

The reason I ask really is I want to keep it an auto but be able to handle about 400 rwhp. I just need to know what I have for research purposes when it comes time to build it finally. Right now I am only at about 285...so I have a way to go still :-p But I know there are people who can build these to handle some power, I just need to find them and know what I have so it will plug right in.

the 700 and the 4l60 are the same trans. GM changed the designation in late 93 to vamp up to the 4l60E. the only difference between the 700 and 4l60E is the fact that the 700 has a tv (throttle valve) cable where as the 60E is shifted by the TCM. All the internals will swap, as far as hard parts (clutches, bands, sun shells, drums, etc.) The only real change was made in the valve body. You can easily get your 700 to handle over 400hp. In fact I built a 700 a few years ago for about $600 that handled that plus some. Now granted that was what I spent in parts, since I did the work myself. If you know someone that builds them you should be able to get it to handle no matter what trans you have.....

the 700r4 can be built to reliably hold well north of 600HP...I have had a 700 in my 94 since 2004...it had 5 years of street use plus 250+ passes. BEfore needing to be "freshened up"

I guess my next question would be this then: When it comes time to get my trans. built, is there anyone in south east Florida that anyone can recommend? Would you ship one in/swap one/mail order a built one? Or is it something I can do myself? I have built a TH350 before but it was at my school at the time where I had all the special tools and stands and such. I work in a race shop now and we have plenty of tools and machinery, but not trans. specific stuff. I am mechanically capable and if I get stumped I have good guys in the shop that I'm sure I can get it figured out should I run into an issue, but I ask because if it is not worth the headache or you don't save that much money doing it yourself, I will ship out the work. Thanks so far the replies...it is definitely helping :-)

Also, just saw a ad below for Monster Transmissions/Performance...I take it that's a site sponsor? Anyway, anyone like that be worthwhile? They have 650 hp trans. for $1200 shipped...free shipping.

well it sounds like you're competent enough. I'd go for a chilton's trans manual, I know the local o'riellys has one here in IL. Then the biggest thing is finding the parts. There is also a place called transstar here in addison, IL. I'd call them and let them know your hp goals and they can set you up with the right parts from the master rebuild to the "beast" sun shell, to the 5 gear spur setup to turn it into a 4L65. If you want I can PM you their local ph. #, since I don't know if they have an 800#. The last time I bought trans parts from them it cost about $600 for the rebuild kit, beast, and a shift kit. Then don't forget the corvette 2nd gear servo and all the other little pieces and you'll probably spent $800 or so. Then you can also say YOU built your trans as opposed to you paid someone else. Most of the big guys use the same parts, but different hands..

BTW it took an experienced guy 36 hrs to put it together

Yea, that number would be great if you PM me with it. I figure it will take me a week of tinkering with it when I have time after work. I am not terribly worried about time if the job is right and saves me $800...but if it takes work days away...more than 3, then it wouldn't be worth my labor as I could have worked the 3 days and paid for the labor if you know what I mean. If it is something I can do in spurts after work for a few hours, that would be great. We build gearboxes in house for our applications, but those are Porsche...bit different than American stuff :-p But like I said, we can probably figure it out.

The Chilton manual is good for the trans. rebuilding? Some people complain about their details...if the trans. book better/good enough to have it alone and build this with base knowledge on transmissions?
