gears & stall
My Z/28 is stock with a k&n, 160 thermostat, and flowmaster cat-back. It's an auto car with the stock .273 gears. I've been considering .342s or .373s, a tranny cooler, and 3200 stall for some time. My questions are: how would this affect daily driving, and how much would I improve my quarter mile time? Any feedback is appreciated.

i have a 3200 edge (kinda loose) and it knocks down city mileage by a few. And i have 3.73s and they knock down hwy mileage by a few. Together the car is a hell of a lot faster. i say do both.

I have 3.42s with 2800 vig.The vig stall a bit higher than their ratings. This is a very streetable combo and you can stock 3.42 gears for like 50 bucks course have to get them installed and stock gears are super quiet.
Buddy liked mine so much he is getting same stall. Usually with lt1 you don't need that much stall .Ls1 like a bit more.
If you want to track the car a lot go with 3.73 and mabye a 3200 vig or bit higher in other makes of stall.
If you are mostly street would say 3.42 with 2800 to 3000 vig. Other make 3200 would be my limit.
For combined mabye 3.42 and 3200 vig or 3400 or so other make.
I got my gears for cheap cheap and my vig stall used for excellent price. No complaint.I had 2.73 gears too. Great on highway but gutless everywhere else.

How much low end did you gain from .273s to .342s? I want mine to improve alot in the quarter, yet not lose too much mpg. It is my daily driver. I just dont like the sluggish .273s. I'm gonna try and put headers, gears, & t.c. on and get it tuned all together. But gas milage is still an important factor as well. I'm averaging 25 mpg right now. Can I stay near this and still get in the 12 second range?

Gear make the car feel 10 times better around town. I doubt I lost much mileage.Rpm don't go up much with the overdrive. I don't check mileage .Don't much care about mileage. Car is not daily driver. Car is for fun. Car still does ok though I think.Drive it nicely it seems to get good mileage.
The stall will chop off like 4 tenths or so. Its a great mod. Gears feel great.Stall really does the job at the track . Be warned with stall and gears you will have to run nittos full time to hook on the street. And something like et streets at the track or you will actually be slower..

3.42's and a 3600 make a great daily driver combo. It will drive great and give you excellent performance. I personally would not go less than 3600 as we have gone great lenghts to design a 3600 that you need for performance but will drive virtully stock under light pedal.
