Default 5th Gear Syncro?

Lately while driving my car when downshifting from 6th gear to 5th it is VERY hard to get into fifth. But shifting through the gears 1-2-3-4-5-6 I have no problems. Even downshifting all the other gears its fine, just 6th to 5th. Car is an 02 Z28 with 57,000 miles on it. Has a Pro 5.0 shifter with a short stick.

Synchro most likely.. Upshifting 4->5 you have a 25% reduction in RPMs, but downshifting from 6->5 you have a 50% increase in RPMs.

Is the clutch stock (57K miles)? A slipping clutch will also start to show in the higher gears where the most engine/clutch load occurs.. Try a WOT punch in 5th or 6th and see if the RPMs climb faster than they should..

If it's the clutch, it will just worse as it wears. Have you ever changed the fluid in the Trans? A fresh fill of DexIII ATF might help if the synchros are worn. You can (and should) rev-match downshifts to help also..

+1 to testing it at WOT in the higher gears.
