Default a/c not blowing cold....compressor?

aight lets start back in july of last year....blew the motor, had to pull and rebuild, etc. the a/c was obviously removed at this time (working perfectly), and then put back on the car a month later. ever since then, the air will not blow cold. we pulled a vaccum to get rid of the pound of air in the system, added freon, and it wont blow cold. the accumulator gets ice cold to the touch, the lines from it are ice cold too, just nothing but hot air in the cabin. the compressor also turns on just fine. is it possible that the shaft in the compressor was broken during removal/reassembly of the engine? this seems to be the only thing the a/c man knows it could possibly be. he had all sorts of mahcines and comps hooked up, i dont know too much about a/c......but that just seems WAY too coincidental to have the compressor go bad when i pulled my motor.

is it possible that the accumulator just got ruined? ive heard if they sit too long they are trash just bc of the moisture they trap.

are you sure there is the right amount of freon in the system. Sometimes to little freon will freeze things up and stop the cold air from coming in.

had a very reputable shop do the work, we have tried charging the system twice. vaccum was pulled prior to doing this each time.

Is the accumulator getting cold to the touch when the engine is running with the A/C "on"? Or does it get cold to the touch only when you put new refridgerant in, then it warms up and won't get cold again with the just the engine running and the A/C "on"?

Then the compressor might not be pumping. A shaft breaking is seriously rare but its possible. You see it spinning, right?

Then the compessor is probably working. This points to a pretty good blockage somewhere.

Does the condensor ever get hot. Even just the metal line that connects right at the top corner of the condensor near the radiator fill cap should get warm. If it doesn't you're blocked up inside. Maybe do a flush.

i thought the compressor can be spinning and still have the input shaft/whatever its called broken.

I doubt the engine would "bog" down like you said it does. The clutch engages electrically andwould just start spinning, the rpm's wouldn't change at all. The drag comes from that piston actually moving.

well the car definately drops down about 100 rpm while idling if you turn the a/c on. this a definate sign that the compressor is 100% working and working fine?

Thats what I'm saying...if it bogs, its working. Thats why there may be a blockage.

try to put some more freon in it. If its cold for a few days then blows hot again, then its a leak. Our compressors have an o-ring inside that corrodes sometimes, your compressor could be working fine but leaking out where that seal is. If the freon works for a few days and then blows cold again, go to your local AP store and get some dye... run that through the system on full blast for about 10 minutes then shut the car off and get a black light and some of those orange tinted glasses, then youll find where your leak is and go from there.

Good luck, im dealing with this same problem as well and am going to run the dye on sunday.

the system never blows cold air, the only thing that gets cold is the accumulator

Most likely a clogged orifice tube. . . But, possibly a leak. . .

Nothing u state makes any sense, and u are shooting in the dark.

It is better to learn how to work on the AC system yourself.

Shops can go suck it!

I agree.

Once you mess with it and learn it for all of about 1 day, its a very simple system. Only time I'll ever let anyone touch my A/C system again is if my compresssor fails....because the dealership gave me a lifetime warranty on parts and labor 5 years ago.

how tough is it changing the compressor? does the starter have to be removed? i havent really got the car on the lift to see what all needs to be done.
